Countdown to #AEHoops: UMBC Women's Basketball

College basketball season begins Friday November 11th! Be sure to check out our daily previews of all nine America East schools. Here are some key notes on UMBC women's basketball:
  • The Retrievers were picked second in the preseason coaches' poll, the second-highest ranking in program history since begin picked first in 2011-12.
  • UMBC is receiving votes in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25. The Retrievers, who return nine letterwinners and six starters from a season before, received three votes in the poll and have not been ranked since 2011, when the team was slotted at number 21 after winning the America East regular season championship.
  • Two key returners for the Retrievers include Preseason All-Conference selections Taylor McCarley and Pandora Wilson. Last season, McCarley garnered first-team All-Conference and All-Defensive team honors after finishing the season ranked sixth in scoring (15.0 points per game), second in assists (5.1), and fourth in steals (2.5) amongst league players. Wilson, who was tabbed to the All-Conference second team last season finished 2015-16 ranked a spot behind McCarley in scoring (14.6 points per game), while ranking sixth in rebounds (7.4).
  • UMBC picked up its first win in the postseason last year when the Retrievers defeated Fairfield, 61-49 in the WBI Tournament.
  • UMBC will open its season on Friday, Nov. 11 when they travel to the Big Apple to face Columbia at 2 p.m.
