Vermont will join Albany in the second round of the NCAA Mens Soccer Championship after the Catamounts beat Rider, 4-1, in a first round matchup Thursday night.

It's the first time in conference history America East has had multiple men's soccer teams in the second round of the tournament and first time any America East sport has had multiple teams alive after NCAA first-round play since Albany and UMBC men's lacrosse in 2007.

First-team All-Conference standout Brian Wright scored three times and added an assist to lead Vermont into the second round for the first time since 1990.

Vermont (14-6-1) will play at 12th-seeded Virginia in the second round on Sunday at1 p.m.

America East champion Albany (12-5-2) will host Boston College in second-round action Sunday at 1 p.m. The Eagles advanced to the second round with a 1-0 win over Fordham Thursday.

America East men's soccer teams have a .577 winning percentage (4-2-7) in NCAA play since 2010 and 13 teams have reached the second round in the last 16 years.

UMass Lowell, the America East regular-season champion, would have received a tournament bid as well, but was ineligible for postseason play due to NCAA reclassifying rules. America East teams helped the league earn the third-best conference RPI in the nation this year.
