McCarley, Sole Earn Season's 1st WBB Weekly Honors

BOSTON - America East women's basketball teams registed two wins over Power 5 conference teams and registered five non-conference wins overall over opening week of college basketball season. Hartford knocked-off Boston College and Maine beat Purdue to highlight the weekend while UMBC and Vermont also notched victories. Here are the season's first weekly award winners:

Player of the Week
Taylor McCarley, UMBC, Sr., G, Bowie, Md.

  • Averaged 21.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per game in a 2-0 week for UMBC.
  • Poured in a career-high 34 points on 11-15 shooting and 10-13 from the free throw line in a season-opening win at Columbia.
  • Also had four rebounds, three assists and a steal against the Lions.

Rookie of the Week
Laia Sole, Maine, Fr., F, Igualada, Spain

  • Averaged 11.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in a 1-1 week for the Black Bears.
  • Totaled 14 points on 6-12 shooting along with three assists in a win over Purude.
  • It was Maine's first win over a Big Ten team since 2004.
  • Had eight points and four rebounds in a loss to No. 10 Mississippi State.
