BOSTON — After winning a share of their third-straight regular-season title, the Hartford Hawks took home four major awards as the 2016 America East Women’s Soccer All-Conference teams and major award winners were announced Wednesday. Albany, Maine and New Hampshire also earned major honors. The awards, along with the all-conference teams, were determined in a vote by the league’s nine head coaches who were not permitted to vote for their own players.
The Hawks claimed Co-Rookie of the Year (Sierra Stone), Midfielder of the Year (Tori Tripp), Defender of the Year (Caitlin Smallfield) and Goalkeeper of the Year (Jessica Jurg). New Hampshire junior Brooke Murphy earned Striker of the Year honors for the second-straight season, while Albany midfielder Meghan Cavanaugh joined Hartford’s Stone as Co-Rookie of the Year. Led by head coach Brendan Faherty, Stony Brook was named Coaching Staff of the Year for the first time in program history.
Striker of the Year
Brooke Murphy, Jr., F, New Hampshire
- The fourth America East student-athlete & second Wildcat to be named Striker of the Year in back-to-back seasons.
- Leads the conference with 11 goals and 25 points.
- Had a league-best five goals and 12 points during conference play.
Midfielder of the Year
Tori Tripp, Sr., M, Hartford
- Just the second Hawk to be named Midfielder of the Year and first since Stephanie Santos in 2013.
- Has totaled five goals and four assists on the year with four goals and two assists coming in conference play.
- Tied for third in the league during America East play with 10 points.
Defender of the Year
Caitlin Smallfield, Sr., B, Hartford
- The second Hawk to be named Defender of the Year and the first since Kelle Leyland in 2006.
- Anchors a Hartford defense that led the league with a 0.92 goals against average.
- The Hawks lead the America East with five shutouts during conference play.
- Has also added three goals on the year, including the game-winner in OT to help Hartford beat Stony Brook and earn a share of the regular-season title.
Goalkeeper of the Year
Jessica Jurg, Sr., GK, Hartford
- Becomes the second player in league history to win Goalkeeper of the Year in back-to-back seasons, joining former Hawk Erin Quinlan, who accomplished the feat in 2011 and 2012.
- Leads the conference with eight shutouts.
- Ranks fourth with a 0.92 goals against average.
- Had five shutouts during league play.
Co-Rookie of the Year
Meghan Cavanaugh, Fr., M, Albany
- The fourth Great Dane and second in the last three years to be named Rookie of the Year.
- Helped Albany to its best record in league play in program history, finishing 6-1-1 and earned a share of the regular-season title.
- Tied for second in the league amongst freshmen with 12 points (four goals and four assists).
Co-Rookie of the Year
Sierra Stone, Fr., M, Hartford
- First Hawk since Sandra Kayulu in 2001 to be named Rookie of the Year.
- Tied for second in the league amongst freshmen with 12 points (three goals and six assists).
- Her six assists is tied for the most in the conference.
Coaching Staff of the Year
Stony Brook (Head coach: Brendan Faherty)
- After being picked sixth in the preseason poll, Stony Brook finished third during the regular season, its highest finish since 2013.
- Brendan Faherty is the first, first-year head coach to win the award.
- Stony Brook’s six wins during league play match the most in program history.

The 2016 America East Championship begins on Thursday, October 27 with two quarterfinal games at 7 p.m. as No. 3 Stony Brook hosts No. 6 Vermont and No. 4 New Hampshire hosts No. 5 Maine. No. 1 Albany and No. 2 Hartford will host semifinal games on Sunday, Oct. 30, and the 2016 title game will be held either Nov. 5 or Nov. 6 at the highest remaining seed.
