INDIANAPOLIS – The University at Albany Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Roberto Vives has been selected by USA Track & Field to serve as an assistant coach for the USA national team this summer at the North America, Central America, and Caribbean Senior Area Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica.
“This is an honor and I am excited to have the opportunity to serve my country in this capacity,” Vives said.
Vives will serve as an assistant coach on the men’s roster, presiding over the jumping and combined events. He will work under head coach Mike Ford from Baylor, who will oversee sprints and hurdles, and alongside assistants Damon Martin from Adams State, coaching distance, Andrew Ninow from Kentucky, coaching throws, and head manager Dan Browne, who competed in the 2004 Olympic Games.
The NACAC has a membership of 31 countries, and the winners of the events in this championsip will be eligible for selection by their countries to compete in the 2015 World Championships in Beijing. Athletes will be selected for the USA roster at the NACAC Championships based on their performances at the 2015 U.S. Outdoor Track & Field Championships in June.
Athletes must be 16 or older for participation, but must be 18 or older to compete in all events. Men younger than 18 are not permitted to compete in the shot put, discus, hammer, javelin, 3,000 steeplechase, or 10,000. Women younger than 18 may not compete in the 3,000 steeplechase or 10,000. Up to two athletes will be selected in each individual event so long as they finish within the top eight at U.S. Championships.
The NACAC Senior Area Championships will be held August 6-9. U.S. Outdoor Championships will be held June 25-28. World Championships will be held August 22-30.
