CLEVELAND, Ohio – University of Hartford men's basketball seniors Mark Nwakamma and Corban Wroe were both named as members of the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association (DI-AAA ADA) Scholar-Athlete Team. This is the second-straight year that Wroe has earned the honor, while it is the first of its kind for Nwakamma.
Basketball players from all Division I-AAA ADA member institutions are eligible for this prestigious award. To be eligible, nominees must have reached junior academic standing at their institution and are required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletics credentials.
Wroe, who holds a 3.71 grade point average as a health sciences/physical therapy major, significantly stepped up his three-point game during his senior season. Combining to make just 33 three-pointers over his first three seasons, the Townsville, Australia, native converted from long range 49 times this season to rank eighth in the America East in threes per game at 1.6.
Following his senior year, Wroe was named to the America East All-Defensive Team and the All-Academic team, the latter his second-straight year with the distinction. Off the court, he has been named to the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll twice for earning a GPA of 3.5 or higher while earning America East Academic Honor Roll accolades one time for achieving a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
Nwakamma, a biology major with a 3.28 combined grade point average, earned All-Conference honors for the fourth-straight year, named to the second team after averaging 12.1 points, ninth best in the America East, and 5.6 rebounds, seventh in the league. In addition, the Leander, Texas, native closed out his collegiate career with 1,550 points, eighth most in the history of the program.
This past season, Nwakamma scored in double figures 19 times, 86 times in his career, including a team-high 20 points in the America East Championship quarterfinals against New Hampshire. Nwakamma's name is engraved all over Hartford's record books as he ranks fifth in the program's Division I history in scoring, seventh in rebounding, third in field goals made and sixth in free throws made. In addition, he is just the third player in program history to have 1,500-plus points and 500-plus rebounds.
