Trio of Seawolves Earn #AEWLAX Honors

BOSTON  - As we inch closer to the end of the regular season, America East squads are fighting for the four tournament spots and the right to host the 2015 America East Championship which will be played May 1 and 3. Stony Brook, which suffered its first loss of the year at No. 20 Johns Hopkins, had a pair of impressive wins to end the week. The Seawolves first became the first America East team to clinch a tournament spot with a win at Vermont, and then earned their second win of the year against a top-10 team with an, 11-9, victory over No. 5 Northwestern. UMBC earned another victory and stands at 3-1 in conference play, setting up a battle for first with Stony Brook on Friday. Vermont stands just a half game ahead of New Hampshire for the final tournament spot at 2-2 in league play while the Wildcats are 2-3 with two weeks to go in the regular season. Here are the week nine award winners:

 

Co-Offensive Player of the Week
Dakotah Savitcheff, Albany, So., Canadaigua, N.Y.

  • Had the best single-game performance for any America East player last week, posting seven goals and one assist with eight points in a 15-4 win over Brown.
  • Now ranks second on Albany's Division I single-season goals list with 48. She needs nine more to become the all-time leader in single-season goals.
  • She has scored seven goals on three different occassions this season.

Co-Offensive Player of the Week
Courtney Murphy, Stony Brook, So., Farmingdale, N.Y.

  • Had three multi-goal games for the Seawolves in a 2-1 week that included wins over Vermont and No. 5 Northwestern.
  • Averaged 3.00 goals per game and 3.67 points per game on a .529 shooting percentage.
  • Scored twice in a 7-5 road loss at No. 20 Johns Hopkins.
  • Posted four goals and one assist in a win at Vermont to help Stony Brook become the first team to clinch a spot in the America East tournament.
  • Scored three goals and added an assist in Stony Brook's upset of No. 5 Northwestern.
  • Scored her 100th goal of her career vs. Johns Hopkins.

Defensive Player of the Week
Maegan Meritz, Stony Brook, Jr., Farmingdale, N.Y.

  • Helped Stony Brook hold all three opponents last week to single digit goals in a 2-1 week. Stony Brook has now held 31 of its last 34 opponents to single digits including 14-straight in conference play.
  • Averaged 3.33 ground balls per game and 1.67 caused turnovers per game.
  • Scooped up a game-high five ground balls and caused a team-high two turnovers in Stony Brook's upset of No. 5 Northwestern.
  • Had three ground balls and two caused turnovers at Vermont.

Rookie of the Week
Kylie Ohlmiller, Stony Brook, Fr., West Islip, N.Y.

  • Ranked third in the conference in both points per game (4.67) and goals per game (3.33) last week while finishing second in shooting percentage at .833.
  • Recorded a game-high seven points and five goals at Vermont.
  • Posted a game-high six points with four goals in Stony Brook's upset of No. 5 Northwestern.

Notes

  • As of April 6, Stony Brook was ranked 9th in the IWLCA poll and 7th in Inside Lacrosse. Albany was 19th in the IWLCA and 18th in Inside Lacrosse.
  • Stony Brook is 2-0 against top-10 teams and 4-1 against 2014 NCAA Tournament teams this year.
  • New Hampshire's Laura McHoul recorded her 150th career point and is No. 9 all-time at UNH after her six-point effort vs. Binghamton.
  • UMBC's three conference wins are the most for the program since 2012.
  • Albany's Dakotah Savitcheff has scored seven goals three different times this season.
  • The Seawolves' win over Northwestern was the first over a top-5 team in program history.
  • Stont Brook has made the America East Championship in every season under coach Joe Spallina and is one win away from clinching home field and at-least a share of the regular-season crown for th third-straight year.
  • Stony Brook has held 31 of its last 34 opponents to single-digit goals, including 13 of 14 this season.
  • Albany has scored 20-plus goals four times this season.
  • Vermont head coach Jen Johnson became the program’s all-time winningest coach with her 77th career win at UVM vs. Sacred Heart.
