BOSTON - The third weekend of conference play saw only one game missed as the Northeast saw another day of winter weather. UMBC earned a sweep over Binghamton to start the conference season 4-2 while Stony Brook took two of three from UMass Lowell. Maine and Albany split their doubleheader on Sunday. Here are the week seven award winners:
Co-Player of the Week
Anthony Gatto, UMBC, Jr., 1B/OF, Hauppauge, N.Y.
- Came up with clutch hit after clutch hit for UMBC in a three-game sweep of Binghamton.
- Hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 13th inning in the opening game of the series to cap a 9-run come-from-behind victory.
- Drove in all three runs in game two of the series with a bases loaded triple as the Retrievers went on to a 3-1 win.
- Finished the series with a pair of RBI, driving in the first run of the game on fielder's choice and singling in the fourth run in the eight.
- Had the game-winning RBI in all three games of the series.
- Finished the week hitting .333 (8-for-16) with six RBI (all vs. Binghamton) and a home run. He did no commit an error in the field.
Co-Player of the Week
Jack Parenty, Stony Brook, Jr., OF, Wantagh, N.Y.
- Led the conference last week with a .500 batting average (6-for-12), helping the Seawolves to a 3-1 record.
- Also led the conference with a .647 on-base percentage and a .917 slugging percentage.
- Had a hit in each of Stony Brook's four games, with three of his six hits going for extra bases.
- Drove in four runs, registering in RBI in three of the team's four games.
- Went 5-for-10 in three games vs. UMass Lowell with three RBI as the Seawolves won two of three.
Pitcher of the Week
Tyler Honahan, Stony Brook, Jr., P, Parker, Colo.
- Struck out a career-high 13 batters, the most for any America East pitcher in a game this season, while picking up the win vs. UMass Lowell in game one of the series.
- Surrendered just one run on four hits in 6.1 innings of work.
Rookie of the Week
Matt Chanin, UMBC, Fr., P, Olney, Md.
- Did not allow a run in eight innings of work last week, allowing just seven hits while striking out three.
- Started two games, going 1-0, including a five-inning outing vs. Binghamton where he shut out the Bearcats on four hits and struck out three.
- Also earned the start in a mid-week non-conference game vs. Mount St. Mary's where did not allow a run on three hits in three innings.
Notes
- UMBC swept Binghamton for the first time in America East play as the Retrievers are off to a 4-2 start to conference action.
- Stony Brook has won each of its first two conference series after taking two of three against UMass Lowell. The Seawolves are tied for second with a 4-2 record.
- Maine played its first home game of the year on Sunday after starting the season with 22-straight on the road.
- Maine's Luke Morrill leads the conference with a .419 batting average.
