4 #AEWLAX Players Earn Week 6 Honors

BOSTON, Mass. - America East women's lacrosse began conference play last week but not before more impressive non-conference performances. No. 17/14 Stony Brook highlighted the week with a, 12-11, upset on the road of No. 6 Florida, the first win over a top-10 team in program history and one of the best wins in conference history. No. 20/18 Albany also notched a big victory over UMass. Vermont had a 2-0 non-conference week, while Stony Brook, Albany and UMBC all won conference-openers. Here are the week six award winners:

Offensive Player of the Week
Vanessa VanderZalm, Vermont, Jr., M, Pelham, Ontario

  • Totaled 10 goals in a pair of victories over Dartmouth and Central Connecticut to lead the conference last week.
  • Had a season-high six goals to go with six draw controls in a 19-11 win over Dartmouth.
  • Tallied four goals , three ground balls and caused five turnovers in a 15-11 win over Central Connecticut. Also accounted for the game-winning goal in the game.
  • Was a perfect four-for-four on free position shots for the week.

Defensive Player of the Week
Alyssa Fleming, Stony Brook, Jr., Shoreham, N.Y.

  • Led Stony Brook with five caused turnovers and three ground balls in the Seawolves' first-ever win over a top-10 opponent at No. 6/7 Florida.
  • Helped Sotny Brook hold Florida's offense to its second-lowest goal total of the season.
  • Also contributed to a defnsive effort that held New Hampshire to four goals in a 13-4 conference win. It was the Wildcats' lowest goal total of the season.

Co-Rookie of the Week
Kylie Ohlmiller, Stony Brook, Fr., West Islip, N.Y.

  • Recorded a game-high six points and five goals to lead Stony Brook past No. 6/7 Florida, 12-11, in the program's first-ever win over a top-10 opponent.
  • Added one goal and two assists in a, 13-4, win over New Hampshire.
  • Ranked second in the conference last week in points per game (4.5) and goals per game (3.0). 
  • Led the league with a perfect shooting percentage (6-for-6).

Co-Rookie of the Week
Marissa Davey, UMBC, Fr., M, Ellicott City, Md.

  • Registered the Retrievers' final four goals in regulation and the game-winner in overtime in a 13-12 victory against Binghamton.
  • Also added three draw controls and a critical cuased turnover.
  • More than doubled her scoring output for the season in one game with five goals.

Notes

  • Stony Brook is No. 17 in the IWLCA Coaches' Poll while Albany is No. 20. The Seawolves are No. 14 in the Inside Lacrosse poll and the Great Danes are No. 18 as of March 16.
  • Stony Brook's 12-11 win over No. 6/7 Florida was its first vs. a top-10 opponent in program history.
  • The Seawolves are 3-0 against 2014 NCAA teams and 2-0 against rnaked opponents.
  • Albany has scored 20-plus goals four times this season.
  • Albany's Rachel Bowles moved into fifth on the Great Danes' all-time goals list with 108.
  • Stony Brook's Amber Kupers became the seventh player in program history to reach the 100-goal plateau with her second of three vs. New Hampshire.
  • Vermont head coach Jen Johnson became the program’s all-time winningest coach with her 77th career win at UVM vs. Sacred Heart.
