Albany, UMBC Grab Week 3 #AEWLAX Honors

BOSTON, Mass. - America East women's lacrosse teams went 4-1 on Saturday as Albany and Stony Brook remain unbeaten in the early stages of the season, while UMBC moved over the .500 mark with a pair of wins last week. Albany's offense continue to rolle with 59 goals in three games, while Stony Brook's defense was stellar once again, allowing just four goals in a win over Drexel. Here are the week three award winners:

Offensive Player of the Week
Rachel Bowels, Albany, Jr., M, Cicero, N.Y.

  • Paced an Albany offense that is scoring at a torrid clip with 11 goals and one assist over two games.
  • Scored five goals on eight shots in a 25-7 win over Manhattan.
  • Helped Albany overcome an 8-5 halftime deficit with six goals and one assist in a 12-11 win over Cornell.
  • Now ranks ninth in Albany DI program history with 123 carer points.

Defensive Player of the Week
Kelsey Major, UMBC, Fr., GK, Eldersburg, Md.

  • Helped UMBC to a 2-0 week, anchoring the defense in wins over American and High Point.
  • Allowed 5.00 goals per game and recorded a total of 16 saves, finishing the week with a .615 save percentage.
  • Held American to just five goals while stopping 12 shots in a 9-5 victory. The 12 saves were the most for a Retriever in a game since April 14, 2012.
  • Made four stops while allowing just five goals in a 7-5 win over High Point. 

Rookie of the Week
Alie Jimerson, Albany, Fr., A, Irving, N.Y. 

  • Totaled three goals and five assists for eight points in a 2-0 week for the Great Danes.
  • Posted three goals, three assists a ground ball and a draw control in a 25-7 win over Manhattan.
  • Added a pair of assists in a win over Cornell.

Notes

  • As of Monday Feb. 23, Stony Brook has been ranked nationally in at-least one major poll 35 times under head coach Joe Spallina.
  • Albany has scored 59 goals in three games so far this season.
  • Kelsey Major's 12 saves were the most for a UMBC player since April 14, 2012.
  • Stony Brook has held 21 of its last 23 opponents to single digit goals.
  • Stony Brook is up to No. 17 in both tge IWLCA Coaches' Poll & Inside Lacrosse poll as of Feb. 23.
