GAINSVILLE, Fla. -- Freshman Kylie Ohlmiller continued to burst onto the college scene, recording six points on five goals and an assist as the No. 17/14 Stony Brook women's lacrosse team upset No. 6/7 Florida, 12-11, Tuesday night at Donald R. Dizney Stadium. The win was the first in program history over a top 10 team for the Seawolves, who improved to 6-0 for the first time.
Sophomore Courtney Murphy struck three times, and senior Michelle Rubino finished with two goals, one assist and a game-high six draw controls for Stony Brook (6-0). Junior Alyssa Fleming led the contest with five caused turnovers and three ground balls.
"To go into Gainesville and come out with a win over a top 10 team speaks volumes about the talent and ability of our kids," said head coach Joe Spallina.
"This win is unreal," said Ohlmiller. "Getting on the bus and going home with a win from Florida is a great feeling and something this program has never done before. We're just keeping our heads high and looking forward to the next game."
The game was tight the whole way through. After Florida took a 4-1 lead, Stony Brook scored the last four goals of the half to take a 5-4 advantage into the locker room. Ohlmiller stashed away a behind-the-back goal at 17:15 of the second half to put the Seawolves in front, 9-6, but Florida responded with a 3-1 run to pull to within one, 10-9.
Ohlmiller's fifth goal of the evening came nearly three minutes later and stretched Stony Brook's lead to two, 11-9, but Florida cut the deficit to one at the 5:11 mark.
Rubino scored from just outside the 8-meter arc on the other end as the Seawolves went up by two, 12-10, with 3:40 to go, but again the Gators cut deficit to one just 47 seconds later.
But the Seawolves, whose win was their second over a ranked team (Notre Dame) and third over a team that played in the NCAA tournament last year (Notre Dame, Jacksonville), won the ensuring draw and held off the Gators for the win.
