BOSTON, Mass. - Conference play got started in the America East this weekend with a pair of series as Stony Brook and Hartford each began league play with series victories. The Seawolves grabbed two of three from reigning champion Binghamton while Hartford took two of three from UMBC. Here are the week five award winners:
Player of the Week
Reed Gamache, Binghamton, Sr., 2B, Exeter, R.I.
- Went 7-for-13 in a three-game series at Stony Brook to rank fourth in the conference in batting average.
- Drove in six runs while scoring three in the series, finishign with a .571 on-base percentage and a .692 slugging percentage.
- Had at-least one hit in each of the three games including a pair of three-hit games to close out the set.
- Went 3-for-4 with two RBI in game two of the series.
- Finished the series by going 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored in Binghamton's 13-2 win.
Pitcher of the Week
Joe Vanderplas, UMBC, So., P, Fairfax, Va.
- Was outstanding in UMBC's conference-opener, tossing a complete game to lead UMBC to a 6-1 win over Hartford.
- Allowed just one unearned run over nine innings while scattering five hits.
- Struck out five batters and needed only 101 pitches.
Rookie of the Week
Andruw Gazzola, Stony Brook, Fr., 1B, Coram, N.Y.
- Led the America East with a .583 batting average, going 7-for-12 in four games including a three-game series with Binghamton, helping the Seawolves take two of three.
- Had a hit in each of Stony Brook's four games including a pair of multi-hit games.
- Drove in three runs and scored three runs while recording a .667 on-base percentage and a .667 slugging percentage.
- Went 3-for-3 in game two of the series vs. Binghamton, driving in a pair of runs.
Notes
- Stony Brook and Hartford each won their conference-opening series by taking two of three.
- Maine is on a three-game winning streak after beating Cornell, 13-9, on Sunday.
- Albany and UMass Lowell open conference play this weekend in a series that will be played at URI while Hartford and Maine battled in West Hartford, Conn.
- UMBC is sixth in the country in fielding percentage at .983.
