UNH Sweeps Week 12 #AESD Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – This week was the final tune up before the America East Swimming & Diving Championship beginning on February 12th.  Binghamton travelled to take on the Red Foxes of Marist, New Hampshire hosted fellow conference member Maine, and Vermont took part in the Middlebury Invitational.  Here’s the week 12 America East swimmer and diver of the week:

Swimmer of the Week
Liza Baykova, New Hampshire, Freshman, Moscow, Russia

  • Freshman Liza Baykova won three individual events in New Hampshire’s meet against Maine.  Baykova took home the 50-yard freestyle (24.09), 100-yard freestyle (51.77) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.11).
  • In addition to her individual wins, the freshman was also part of the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay team.  The quartet of Sarah Broderick, Oneida Cooper, Jessica Harper and Baykova won the event in 3:32.56.
  • New Hampshire won the meet against Maine 176-99.

Diver of the Week
Nicole Zahka, New Hampshire, Senior, Medway, Massachusetts 

  • Senior Nicole Zahka picked up the diving sweep on her senior day, winning both the one-meter and three-meter events in the Wildcats meet against the Black Bears.
  • Zahka registered a 224.95 on the shorter dive, and set a new career high for the second consecutive week on the high dive, scoring 271.60.  The senior’s three-meter score was the highest of America East diver this week.
  • New Hampshire won the meet against Maine 176-99.

Swimming & Diving Notes

  • Binghamton travelled to Poughkeepsie, New York to swim against the Marist Red Foxes.  The Bearcats fell the Red Foxes, 163-137.  There were three Binghamton swimmers who won two events: senior Caitlin Kelly won the 50-free (24.17) and 100-free (53.75); senior Corinne Zotter captured the 100-breaststroke (1:06.40) and 200-breaststroke (2:25.93); and junior Selina Ng won the 100-butterfly (58.98) and 200-butterfly (2:11.93).  Another winner for Binghamton was freshman Maria Trivino, taking the 200 IM (2:11.60).
  • Maine took on conference foe New Hampshire and fell to the Wildcats 176-99.  Orono, Minnesota native Naja Harvey won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.31, and claimed third in the 200 breast (2:23.15).   Senior Abby Linn won the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:21.94, and Maine’s 400-yard freestyle relay time of Harvey, Katerina Mosquera-Cardi, Chloe Adams and Emily Borger took home first in 3:42.10. 
  • New Hampshire hosted Maine, won 14 of the 15 events, which resulted in a topping of the Black Bears 176-99.  Freshman Liza Baykova and Katie Mann both won three events.  The rookie took the 50-yard free style (24.09), 100-yard freestyle (51.77) and 200-yard freestyle (1:51.11).  Mann took the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.74), 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.75), and 100-yard butterfly (57.59).  On the board, senior Nicole Zahka swept the diving events, scoring 224.95 in the one-meter, and a career best 271.60 in the three-meter.
  • Vermont travelled to Middlebury, Vermont and competed against Middlebury, Springfield, Tufts and Williams.  Freshmen Jess Gorham, Shannon Cowley, Alexy Novelli, Kelly Lennon set a new Vermont record in the 400 medley relay (4:02.90).  Courtney Gray, Shannon Cowley, Andie Blaser, and Christa Weaver swam the 200-medley relay to a first place finish (1:46.90).  In addition, Cowley clocked first placed in the 100-breaststroke with a time of 1:07.80.
  • Up next on the schedule is the America East Championship starting on February 12, being hosted at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Sports & Recreation Center.
