Albany, Stony Brook Earn Week 2 #AELAX Honors

BOSTON, Mass. - Stony Brook and Albany earned wins in their women's lacrosse season-opneners to split the week two America East awards. The Seawolves topped USC, which was receiving votes in last week's poll, 7-4, while the Great Danes had an impressive, 21-5, win at Quinnipiac. Vermont put a scare into No. 6 Boston College before losing, 13-10, while UNH split a pair of games last week with a win over Holy Cross and a loss to Massachusetts. Here are the week two award winners:

Offensive Player of the Week
Maureen Keggins, Albany, Sr., A, Watertown, N.Y.

  • Totaled 9 points in Albany's 21-5 season-opening win at Quinnipiac.
  • Scored five goals while dishing out four assists to lead the conference. 
  • The nine points are the most for an America East player since Vermont's Jessica Roach had 11 vs.  Binghamton on April 19 of last year.

Defensive Player of the Week
Maegan Meritz, Stony Brook, Jr., Farmingdale, N.Y.

  • Caused one turnover and scooped two ground balls in a 7-4 win over USC.
  • Efforts helped Seawolves hold USC to 10 shots overall and only two in the first half
  • Led Stony Brook defensive unit that allowed single-digit goals for 20th time in 22 games dating back to last season. 

Rookie of the Week
Emma Powlin, Albany, Fr., M, Penfield, N.Y.

  • Tallied four goals in her collegiate debut, a 21-5 win over Quinnipiac.
  • Also had four groundballs, gour draw controls and two caused turnovers.
  • Her four goals came on six shots for a .667 shooting percentage.
  • Recorded the program's first-ever goal

Notes

  • Stony Brook is up to No. 17 in the IWLCA Coaches' Poll. The Seawolves were No. 16 in last week's Inside Lacrosse Poll with Albany receiving votes.
  • Stony Brook has held 20 of the last 22 opponents to single digit goals dating back to last season.
  • UNH earned its first win of the year, 12-10, over Holy Cross.
  • Four Wildcats – Nicole Grote, Kayleigh Hinkle, Laura McHoul and Rachael Nock – have recorded a point all three games this season.
  • Vermont played No. 6 Boston College tough, falling to the Eagles 13-10 after trailing by just one goal in the closing minutes.
  • Five of UNH’s next six games are on the road. The Wildcats play the first of three consecutive road games Wednesday at Dartmouth.
