BOSTON, Mass. - The first weeked of college baseball is in the books and each of the three America East teams in action grabbed a win. Stony Brook topped Nicholls State in its season-opener, while Binghamton bested the SEC's Auburn in game two of the series. Maine earned its first victory in the final game of the series against Wisconsin Milwaukee. Here are the week one award winners:
Player of the Week
Jake Thomas, Binghamton, Sr., OF, Merrick, N.Y.
- Hit .464 with .846 slugging in 3-game set at Auburn, helping Binghamton to its first win over an SEC team since 2010.
- Led the Bearcats to a win in game two of the series, going 4-5 with a home run and five RBI, coming just a double short of the cycle.
- Tied a career-high with four hits in the game. His three-run home run in the fourth broke a 2-2 tie and then provided insurance in the eighth with a two-run triple.
- Finish with six hits, five RBI and three runs scored in the series.
Pitcher of the Week
Tyler Honahan, Stony Brook, Jr., P, Parker, Colo.
- Earned the win on the mound in Stony Brook's season-opener, a 6-0 win over Nicholls State.
- Tossed six shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two.
- Allowed just one runner to reach scoring position.
Rookie of the Week
Andruw Gazzola, Stony Brook, Fr., INF, Coram, N.Y.
- Went four-for-11 in his first collegiated series with a run scored and a .417 on-base percentage.
- Had a pair of hits in his collegiate debut while scoring a run in a 6-0 win over Nicholls State.
- Collected a hit in games two and three of the series.
Notes
- Binghamton earned its first win over an SEC opponent since beating Tennessee in 2010 with an 11-5 victory over Auburn in game two of the series.
- Stony Brook and Maine each earned a win. The Seawolves took 1 of 3 from Nicholls State while Maine beat Wisconsin Milwaukee in the final game of its four-game series.
- Albany, UMBC, Hartford and UMass Lowell all open this weekend.
