BOSTON - America East women's basketball teams compiled a 9-4 non-conference record last week as UMBC continued its winning streak while Maine picked-up a signature win over Clemson. Albany also had a strong week on the West Coast, beating UC Davis and falling by one point in the final seconds to USC. 

Here are the week six award winners:

Player of the Week
Shereesha Richards, Albany, Sr., F, Rae Town, Jamaica

  • Averaged 37.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game while shooting 63.6% from the floor in a 1-1 week for the Great Danes at the Women of Troy Tournament hosted by USC.
  • Matched her own program single-game record with 41 points in a win over UC Davis. The 41 points are tied for the sixth-most by an America East player in a single game.
  • Also added 14 rebounds vs. UC Davis.
  • Finished the weekend with 33 points on 9-of-15 shooting along with nine rebounds in a one-point loss to host USC.
  • Broke the America East record with her 17th career Player of the Week honor.

Rookie of the Week
Ogechi Anyagaligbo, Stony Brook, Fr., F, Miami, Fla.

  • First America East student-athlete to be named Rookie of the Week for five-straight weeks since Boston U.'s Chantell Alford won it six-straight weeks in 2009-10.
  • Averaged eight points and 14 rebounds per game in a 2-0 week for the Seawolves.
  • Started the week with eight points and nine boards in just 26 minutes vs. Morgan State.
  • Posted eight points and 19 rebounds in a win over Wagner. The 19 rebounds were the most for an America East freshman since former Seawolf Dana Ferraro had 19 vs. Hartford in 2005.

Notes

  • Three America East teams are featured in the Mid-Major Top-25 released on Dec. 15, including Albany (16), Maine (21) and Stony Brook (RV).
  • According to the latest College Basketball RPI report, the America East is 19th among Division I conferences, five spots higher than it was on this date a year ago. Both Albany (44) and Maine (100) are in the top-100.
  • UMBC won its sixth-straight game, beating Loyola 52-46 on Sunday. The Retrievers now have eight non-conference wins, the most for the program since the 2008-09 season.
  • Vermont outscored NJIT, 31-13, in the second half to mount a comeback and win its third-straight game, 54-46, over the Highlanders.
  • USC banked in a three-pointer in the final seconds to hand Albany a heartbreaking 68-67 road loss. Albany’s three losses have been by a combined 12 points.
  • Maine beat Clemson by 33 points on Friday, the largest margin of victory for an America East team over any Power 5 opponent in conference history.
  • The Black Bears held the Tigers to just two field goals in the third quarter, outscoring Clemson 22-4 in the period.
  • For Maine, it is the first time in history that it tallied back-to-back 30+ point victories and the first time it has defeated two school’s from power conference in the same year since defeating Wake Forest and Rutgers in 1989.
  • Shereesha Richards scored 41 points for Albany vs. UC Davis on Friday, tied for the sixth-most in a single game in conference history. It was the most points for an America East player since Richards posted 41 vs. Vermont on Jan. 9, 2014.
  • Stony Brook freshman Ogechi Anyagaligbo pulled-down 19 rebounds at Wagner on Friday, the most for an America East freshman since former Seawolf Dana Ferraro had 19 vs. Hartford in 2005. It was also the most rebounds for any America East player in a single game since Albany’s Tammy Phillip had 19 in 2014.
