BOSTON - Albany, UMBC and Maine continued their strong play during the non-conference season to highlight the fifth week of America East women's basketball action. UMBC has won four-straight and six of its last seven after going 2-0 last week. Albany also went 2-0 while capturing its sixth-straight Albany Cup and winning 7 of its first 9 to open the season, while Maine won its ninth-straight home game dating back to last year.
Here are the week five award winners:
Player of the Week
Imani Tate, Albany, Jr., G, Bronx, N.Y.
- Averaged 21.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game in a 2-0 week for the Great Danes.
- Shot 59.4% for the week, hitting 19-of-32 from the field.
- Posted 16 points, six rebounds, three steals and three assists in a win at Fairfield.
- Led all players in scoring, rebounding and steals in a win over rival Siena in the Albany Cup.
- Scored 27 points to go with nine rebounds, five steals and three assists as the Great Danes beat the Saints for the sixth-straight time.
Rookie of the Week
Ogechi Anyagaligbo, Stony Brook, Fr., F, Miami, Fla.
- First America East student-athlete to be anmed Rookie of the Week for four-straight weeks since Boston U,’s Chantell Alford won its six-straight weeks in 2009-10.
- Notched 14 points on six-of-10 shooting to go with eight rebounds in a loss at Yale.
- Also added two steals in 31 minutes of action.
Notes
- Five America East teams are featured in the Mid-Major Top-25 released on Dec. 8, including Albany (20), Maine (24), Stony Brook (RV), New Hampshire (RV) and Hartford (RV).
- Albany won its sixth-straight Albany Cup, beating Siena 61-42. Imani Tate led the Great Danes with 24 points and nine rebounds.
- Binghamton’s Alyssa James scored 33 points in a loss at Columbia on Dec. 9, becoming the first Bearcat since Erica Carter in 2009 to eclipse the 30-point plateau.
- Maine doubled-up Bryant 76-38 to win its ninth-straight home game. The 38 point victory is Maine’s largest over a Division-I opponent since it defeated Drexel, 110-68 on March 5, 1997.
- UMBC used a decisive 26-0 third quarter run to defeat Morgan State, 65-46. The Retrievers have won four-straight games and six of their last seven.
- UMBC is forcing opponents to turn the ball over an average of 24 times per game during its four-game winning streak.
- Asia Mitchell-Owens scored a career-high 22 points while Lindsey Doucette notched her third double-double of the season with 22 points and 13 rebounds in a win over Holy Cross on Thursday. It was UMass Lowell’s first win over Holy Cross since 1977-78.
- Courtney Wright’s bucket with nine seconds left lifted Vermont to its first road win of the season, 56-54, over Dartmouth on Thursday.
- With 1,856 career points, Shereesha Richards has moved into 11th all-time on the America East career scoring list.
- Maine’s Liz Wood, Stony Brook’s Brittany Snow and UMBC’s Emily Russo were nominated for the WBCA Allstate Good Works team. This distinguished award shines a spotlight on a select group of student-athletes who have shown dedication to service in their communities.
- The America East is No. 22 in the first release of the RPI. The conference was 27th at this time last year.
