BOSTON - The America East volleyball tournament picture became murky after another week of action, as three teams are battling for the final two spots in the championship. Binghamton grabbed a pair of huge wins to pull back into the tournament fight and enters the final week of action a half game behind both Stony Brook and UMBC. Meanwhile, at the top of the standings, Albany has a half game lead on New Hampshire. The top-seed in the America East will host the 2015 volleyball championship. Here are the week 11 award winners:
Player of the Week
Katy Henchy, Hartford, So., OH/RS, Ventura, Calif.
- Led the Hawks to a pair of victories, averaging 3.71 kills and 1.14 blocks per set.
- Finished with a .468 hitting percentage.
- Notched 17 kills and five blocks to help Hartford win its first match of the season in four sets over Quinnipiac.
- Totald nine kills, four digs and three blocks in a sweep of UMass Lowell.
Setter of the Week
Sarah Ngo, Binghamton, So., S, Franklin, Tenn.
- Averaged 11.44 assists and 3.11 digs per set in a 2-0 week for the Bearcats.
- Helped Binghamton to a .299 hitting percentage.
- Notched 57 assists and 12 digs in a four-set win over UMBC.
- Totaled 46 assists and 16 digs in a five-set win over Stony Brook.
Rookie of the Week
Gabby Alicea, Binghamton, Fr., OH, San Juan, Puerto Rico
- Averaged 3.67 kills, 1.89 digs and notched a .310 hitting percentage in a 2-0 week for the Bearcats.
- Posted 17 kills and 10 digs on a .394 hitting percentage in a four-set win against UMBC.
- Had 16 kills and seven digs in a five-set win against Stony Brook.
- Also totaled six blocks for the week.
Defensive Specialist of the Week
Nicole Otero, Albany, Fr., L, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico
- Led the conference averaging 6.12 digs per set in a pair of wins for Albany.
- Reached the 20-dig plateau in both matches last week, finishing with 26 vs. Stony Brook and 23 vs. UMBC.
- Helped Albany hold opponents to a .139 hitting percentage.
Notes
- Binghamton notched a pair of wins and is 5-6, sitting a half game behind Stony Brook and UMBC. The Bearcats have one match remaining while both the Seawolves and Retrievers have two matches and sit at 5-5.
- Albany is a half game ahead of New Hampshire at the top of the standings. The Great Danes have one match remaining while New Hampshire has two matches to go. The top seed will host the America East Volleyball Championship.
