Albany Battles Penn State in NCAA 1st Round Friday

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - After capturing its first America East Women's Soccer title, the Albany Great Danes travel to Penn State to take on the No. 1 seed Nittany Lions in the first round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship. The game will kickoff Friday, November 13, at 6:30 PM.

America East Teams in the NCAA Tournament

  • America East teams are 11-25 all-time in the NCAA tournament.
  • The conference’s last win came in 2011 when Boston University defeated Harvard, 3-0.
  • Boston University was the first team America East team since Hartford in 2000 to host an NCAA game in 2011. 
  • The America East has received multiple bids to the NCAA tournament five times, most recently in 2006.
  • Hartford twice went deep in the NCAA tournament, winning three games before falling in the quarterfinals in 1999 and reaching the final four in 1992.
  • This is the third time an America East team has faced Penn State in NCAA play, and the eighth against a current Big Ten school. America East teams are 0-2 vs. Penn State and 0-7 vs. current Big Ten opponents.
  • The last meeting vs. Penn State was in 2004 when the Nittany Lions beat Binghamton, 6-1, in the first round. Penn State also beat Hartford in the 1999 quarterfinals in State College, Pa.
  • Albany is the seventh different America East team to reach the NCAA tournament (Binghamton, Boston U., Hartford, UMBC, New Hampshire and Stony Brook)
  • Albany is making its first appearance in the NCAA tournament after making winning its first conference title. 

About the Great Danes

  • Albany is the fifth different team to win the America East tournament in the last five seasons.
  • Albany trailed for 78 minutes of the America East title game before Allison Carhart scored the equalizer in the 82nd minute. Kelly Kempf then scored the game winning in the 88th minute.
  • The Great Danes were just the second No. 2 seed to defeat the No. 1 seed in the America East title game. The No. 2 seed is 2-10 all-time against the No. 1 seed. Albany is also just the second No. 2 seed to win the America East title, joining Boston U. in 2007.
  • Albany’s 11 wins are its most in prgoram Division I history. 
  • The Great Danes lead the conference in goals scored with 33.
