CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Conference play got started last week and a pair of players that helped their teams to America East victories earned weekly honors. Albany lost a tough non-conference road game before winning at Maine to open the America East slate and earn Player of the Week honors after a tremendous week of scoring from their junior forward. Binghamton freshmen continue to dominate the Rookie of the Week award, combining for six now this year. Here are the week eight award winners:
Player of the Week
Shereesha Richards, Albany, Jr., F, Rae Town, Jamaica
- Led the conference in scoring, averaging 27.5 points per game while shooting 55.6 percent from the floor.
- Also averaged 9.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals while helping the Great Danes go 1-1.
- Posted an America East season-high 34 points in a road loss to top-10 North Carolina, pulling down nine boards and hitting 12-of-15 from the free throw line.
- Helped Albany to a, 49-43, win over Maine in the team's conference-opener, scoring 21 points on nine-of-14 shooting and grabbing nine rebounds.
Rookie of the Week
Jasmine Sina, Binghamton, Fr., G, Lake Hoptacong, N.J.
- Registed 19 points, five rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals in Binghamton's, 65-64, conference-opening win over UMass Lowell.
- Drained a pair of 3-pointers and hit seven of her nine free throw attempts.
- Helped Binghamton rally from an 11-point second half deficit, including hitting all three of her free throwns in the final minute after getting fouled while taking a 3-pointer.
- Averaging 15.2 points per game this season and has reached oduble figures in seven-straight games.
Notes
- Albany has won 25-straight conference road games.
- Albany's Shereesha Richards moved into 4th all-time at Albany with 1,240 career points. She has reached double figures in 14-straight games and has five double-doubles.
- New Hampshire handed Stony Brook its first loss at Island FCU Arena, 60-52.
- UNH is 8-0 when scoring 60-plus points this season.
- Freshmen Jasmine Sina and Imani Watkins have accounted for 51.9% of Binghamton's scoring this season.
- Hartford led wire-to-wire for the third time this season in a win over Vermont.
- The America East has three wins vs. Power 5 Conferences - 2 vs. Big Ten (Albany and Hartford def. Penn State) and one vs. ACC (Maine def. Boston College). It is the first time since 2009-10 the America East has three wins over Power 5 teams.
- The 29 points by Imani Watkins vs. Rider is the most points scored by a Bearcat player since Orla O'Reilly also scored 29 points against Siena on Nov. 15, 2011.
