CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Four America East schools took to the pool on Saturday, January 24th. Maine travelled to Bryant, UMBC hosted East Carolina, New Hampshire swam against Rutgers, and Vermont took on Rhode Island. Here are the Week 11 #AESD Award Winners:
Swimmer of the Week
Jessica Harper, New Hampshire, Freshman, Easthampton, Massachusetts
- Freshman Jessica Harper won two events in New Hampshire’s meet against Rutgers.
- Harper won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:09.25, twenty-two seconds faster than the nearest competitor. Harper’s time in the event is the top mark of all the America East swimmers in the 1,000-yard freestyle event.
- The freshman also won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.99 seconds. The time is a person best for Harper thus far in her America East career.
- New Hampshire did suffer a setback against Rutgers 183-117.
Diver of the Week
Coco Darelius, UMBC, Junior, Rye, New York
- UMBC took to the pool against Eastern Carolina University and fell 118-112.
- Junior Coco Darelius took first place in the 1-meter dive with a score of 261.15. The Rye, N.Y. native then took second place in the 3-meter dive with a tally of 267.30.
- Both diving scores were the highest among America East divers in competition this week.
Swimming & Diving Notes
- Maine competed in a dual meet at Bryant this past Saturday and came out victorious against the Bulldogs 134-128.
- The Black Bears win the 200-yard medley team of Amber Murray, Naja Harvey, Taylor Sharp, and Karerina Mosquera-Cardi (1:50.44) won their event, and the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Harvey, Mosquera-Cardi, Tessa Lindsley and Emily Borger also finished number one (1:39.11).
- Individual Black Bear victories include Mosquera-Cardi (50-yard freestyle), Emma Pontius (100-yard butterfly), and Harvey (100 and 200 yard breaststroke).
- The UMBC Retrievers fell to East Carolina on Saturday 188-112.
- The victories for the Retrievers came at the hands of Alissa Caulfield who picked up a win in the 200-freestyle (1:55.58), and Emily Escobedo in the 200-breaststroke in 2:17.58.
- On the diving board, Coco Darelius took first place in the 1-meter drive and came up as runner up in the 3-meter.
- New Hampshire suffered a loss against Rutgers University 183-117, Saturday at Swasey Pool.
- The highlights for the Wildcats include Liza Baykova and Jessica Harper; each of who won a part of first place finishes. Baykova led the way in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:51.53 and 100-yard freestyle in 52.20; Harper won the 1,000 yard freestyle with a conference best time of 10:09.25, 22.59 seconds faster than the next finisher. In addition the freshman also took the 100-yard butterfly with a career best time of 56.99.
- On their senior day, the University of Vermont won 12 of 16 events in route to a 174-123 victory of Rhode Island.
- Freshman Kelly Lennon claimed victories in the 500-yard freestyle (5:12.82) and 1000-yard freestyle (10:44.37). Junior Maggie Preston swept the diving competitions with marks of 229.71 and 248.99 in the 1 and 3 meter jumps.
- Other Catamount victors include Christa Weaver and Sarah Mantz, who won the 50 freestyle (24.37) and 200 freestyle (1:56.32), and Courtney Gray with Ilsa Feierabend taking the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke in 59.60 and 2:06.36 respectively.
- Up next on the slate for America East schools is the following: Maine and New Hampshire match up against each other on the 30th, Binghamton travels to Marist on the 31st, and Vermont is set to take part in the Middlebury Invitational.
