CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Binghamton and UMBC dove into action this past week. Binghamton began the new year hosting a meet against Bucknell, while the Retrievers of UMBC swam against Howard. Below are the week 9 #AESD award winners:
Swimmer of the Week
Corinne Zotter, Binghamton, Senior, Vestal, New York
- Corinne Zotter won the 100 yard breaststroke (1:04.53), 200 yard breaststroke (2:23.01), and was part of the victorious 200 yard medley relay (1:49.62), and 200 yard freestyle relay (2:14.57).
- Zotter’s efforts in the 100-yard breaststroke led to a new pool record, breaking the previous mark of 1:05.49 set by Anneli Johnson of St. Bonaventure back in 2008.
- Zotter’s times in both the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke ranked atop all America East swimmers this week.
- Binghamton fell short as a team to Bucknell, losing 170-125.
Diver of the Week
Coco Darelius, UMBC, Junior, Rye, New York
- Coco Darelius swept both the one meter and three meter diving events for the Retrievers in their meet against Howard.
- Darelius registered a 294.98 on the one meter dive, and a even 324 on the three meter dive. Both scores were the highest this week among all America East competitors.
- UMBC came out the victor in their meet, defeating Howard 121-95.
- This is the fourth time this year that Darelius has been named the America East Diver of the Week.
Swimming & Diving Notes
- The Binghamton Bearcats began 2015 hosting the Bucknell Bison. The Bearcats would lose the meet 170-125, but numerous individual winners shined.
- Corinne Zotter won both the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke, and was part of the first-place finishing 200 freestyle and medley relay teams.
- Zotter set a new pool record in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.53.
- Bearcats also took first in the 200 individual medley with Stephanie Malyszka winning the race in 2:14.57.
- Imani Williams won the three meter diving event with the top score of 240.53.
- UMBC hosted Howard to begin the new calendar year, and the Retrievers came out on top with a 121-95 victory.
- UMBC swept both the medley and freestyle medley. The team of Lauren Day, Emily Escobedo, Amanda Day and Kristie Langford won the 200 medley relay in 1:48.70, and their teammates Fay Hixenbaugh, Allison Atkinson, Brooke St. Martin with Alissa Caulfield took the 200 freestyle in 1:41.45.
- Emily Escobedo won both the 200 freestyle (1:58.12) and 100 freestyle (54.27).
- Other individual winners for the Retrievers include Alissa Caulfield (100 freestyle), Carly Waters (100 breast). Kayla Lilly (200 butterfly), Catherine Frediani (50 freestyle, 200 IM), Hannah Sutherland (200 backstroke), Cassie Jordan (200 breast), and Amanda Day (100 butterfly).
- Coco Darelius swept both diving events, recording a 294.98 on the one-meter, and a 324 on the three meter.
- Four schools will be competing over the next seven days. Binghamton hosts Colgate on the 16th and then travels to St. Bonaventure the following day. Maine hosts Bowdoin on the 17th, while New Hampshire travels to Yale and Vermont enters Boston to swim against Northeastern on the same day.
