SBU Goes 3-0; Earns Pair of #AEVB Week 4 Honors

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Stony Brook earned a pair of weekly awards after going unbeaten last week and winning the Seawolves Invitational. Hartford also continued its hot start, going 3-1 to improve to 9-6 for the first time since 2002. Here are the weekly award winners:

Player of the Week
Taylor Gillie, Stony Brook, Sr., Middle Blocker, Fort Wayne, Ind.

  • Led the conference in blocks per set at 1.55 and ranked third in hitting percentage at .323, helping Stony Brook go 3-0 in the Seawolves Invite.
  • Was named tournament MVP.
  • Became the first Seawolf to record 10+ blocks in a match sice Evann Slaughter in 2011 with a career and match-high 10 vs. Western Michigan.
  • Tallied a double-double vs. Western Michigan, adding 14 kills to her 10 blocks in a five-set win.
  • Hit over .300 in two of the three matches over the weekend and finished with 2.55 kills per set.

Setter of the Week
Nicole Vogel, Stony Brook, Jr., Setter, Costa Mesa, Calif.

  • Led the conference with 10.55 assists per set and added 2.91 digs per set while helping Stony Brook to a 3-0 record at the Seawolves Invite.
  • Helped the Seawolves lead the conference in hitting percentage as a team last week.
  • Quarterbacked the offnese to two of its three best hitting percentages of the season, including a season-high .368 vs. Kennesaw State.
  • Notched two double-doubles over the weekend with 35 assists and 12 digs vs. Kennesaw State followed by a season-high 48 assists and 12 digs vs. Western Michigan.

Rookie of the Week
Katy Henchy, Hartford, Fr., Setter, Ventura, Calif.

  • Ranked second on the team and led all freshmen with 2.18 kills per set.
  • Ranked second in the conference with 1.18 blocks per set.
  • Tied a career-high with seven blocks vs. NJIT.
  • Had double figure kills twice in the CCSU tournament, with 10 vs. NJIT and 12 vs. Providence.
  • Helped the Hawks to a 3-1 record.

Notes

  • Stony Brook is 4-0 at home this year.
  • UMass Lowell plays its home opener on Saturday, Sept. 27th after playing 16-straight road matches to start the year.
  • Hartford is off to its best start since 2002 at 9-6.
  • Hartford totaled a season-high 16 blocks vs. Providence.
  • UMBC shocked American Athletic Conference's Tulane in five sets at the Arizona Invitational over the weekend.
