UMBC's Hassan, Vermont's Clark Take Home 2nd #AEXC Weekly Honors

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Ten America East cross-country teams competed last week. Maine and Vermont took part in the UMass Invitational in Amherst, Mass while UMBC ran at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis Md.  In addition, Stony Brook hosted the Wolfie Invitational and UMass Lowell participated in the Dartmouth Cross Country Invitational in Hanover, N.H.

 Male Performer of the Week
Hassan Omar, UMBC, Jr., Fredrick, Md.

  • Finished 11th overall at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md., with a time of 25:06.35. (8K)
  • UMBC as a team finished third overall out of 10 competing schools. 
  • The two schools to place higher than the Retrievers were Navy and American. The Midshipmen are ranked seventh in the Mid-Atlantic Region by the USTFCCCA, and America is ranked eleventh in the same Mid-Atlantic as well.
  • Omar had the second-highest finish in the race for a non-Navy or American runner.

Female Performer of the Week
Alicia Clark, Vermont, Jr., Pawlet Vt.

  • Placed 11th overall at the UMass Invitational, finishing with the best 5K time among America East competitors at 17:47.70.
  • Clark placed best among her Catamount teammates for the second straight week.
  • Vermont placed fifth overall out of eight schools at the invitational.
  • The Catamounts went up against Boston College and UConn, both of whom are ranked in the Northeast Region; BC ranked second and UConn ranked twelfth. The Eagles of Boston College are also ranked 17th in the USTFCCCA national poll.

Men's Cross Country Notes

  • Vermont took home first place at the UMass Invitational (6K). Maine also raced in the event and placed third.
  • Stony Brook hosted the Wolfie Invitational (8K) and finished fifth.
  • UMass Lowell traveled to Hanover, N.H, and finished fifth among six teams at the Dartmouth Cross Country Invitational (8K).
  • UMBC took home third at the Navy Invitational (8K).
  • In the latest USTFCCCA Regional Rankings, UMBC is 14th in the Mid-Atlantic Region. New Hampshire, Stony Brook, and Vermont all are ranked in the North East Region. The Wildcats rank 11th, while the Seawolves place 14th, and the Catamounts enter the rankings at #15.

Women's Cross Country Notes

  • Vermont placed fifth and Maine finished eighth at the UMass Invitational (5K).
  • Stony Brook hosted the Wolfie Invitational (5K) and won the event.  Christina Melian finished first overall with a time of 18:37.36.
  • UMass Lowell took part in the Dartmouth Invitational (6K) and placed fifth out of six teams
  • UMBC finished fourth out of eleven teams at the Salty Dog Invitational (6K) in Annapolis, Md.
  • In the latest USTFCCCA Regional Rankings, UMBC ranks 11th in the Mid-Atlantic Region. In the Northeast Region, New Hampshire ranks sixth, Stony Brook is ninth, and Albany sits at 13th.
