Six America East Baseball student-athletes were selected in the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft which was conducted June 5-7. It was the most student-athletes selected in the draft since 12 were taken in 2012.
Hartford junior pitcher Sean Newcomb headlined the group, going 15th overall to the Los Angeles Angels. He became the second highest pick in America East history and the highest every in Hartford program history.
Another Hawk in senior Brian Hunter was the next to go, picked in the ninth round (275th overall) by the Cincinnati Reds.
America East Player of the Year, Kevin Krause, went just six picks after Hunter, going 281st to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was the sixth player in Stony Brook history to be taken in the first ten rounds of the draft.
Krause's teammate, Brandon McNitt, was the next America East player taken, going in the 27th round to the Houston Astros.
One round later, Binghamton's Bill Bereszniewicz became the ninth player in Bearcat history to be drafted when the Los Angeles Dodgers took him with the 849th overall selected.
Hartford catcher James Alfonso rounded out the America East draft picked when he went in the 30th round to the Seattle Mariners. He was the third Hawk chosen in the draft.
Outside of the draft, Maine's Tommy Lawrence singed a free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Rays. He was the 2013 America East Pitcher of the Year and a first team all-conference selection in 2014.
