Four men’s basketball programs highlighted the 20 America East programs that received NCAA Public Recognition Awards based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate, the NCAA announced Wednesday. These teams were honored for posting scores in the top 10 percent of their sport.
The four men’s basketball programs honored (University of Hartford, University of New Hampshire, Stony Brook University, University of Vermont) are the second-most of any Division I conference, trailing only the Patriot League, and accounts for 10 percent of the 40 total men’s basketball teams honored.
“Congratulations to these teams and universities on their impressive accomplishment,” said America East Commissioner Amy Huchthausen, “This recognition exemplifies our mission to empower our student-athletes to be successful in all realms of college life, especially in the classroom.”
Hartford led the conference with five teams honored while Stony Brook and Vermont each had four, New Hampshire had three, University of Maine had two, Binghamton University had one and Providence College volleyball, an associate member for the 2013 season, was honored.
Hartford’s men’s indoor and outdoor track & field programs and Maine’s women’s cross country team are three of just 146 teams nationally to earn recognition every year.
APRs for all Division I teams will be released May 14. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally and measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in each sport. Teams must meet a certain academic threshold to qualify for the postseason, and they also can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
