STONY BROOK, N.Y. – For the second-straight year and fifth time since 2006, Albany and UMBC will decide the America East men's lacrosse title as both teams rode prolific offensive performances to post wins in the semifinals of the 2014 America East Men's Lacrosse Championship Thursday at Stony Brook's LaValle Stadium. Third-seeded UMBC scored six times in each of the first and fourth quarters to beat second-seeded Binghamton, 16-10, in the first semi, while top-seeded Albany won a 17-16 overtime thriller over fourth-seeded Stony Brook in the nightcap.The Great Danes and Retrievers will face off in the 2014 America East Men's Lacrosse title game Saturday at 10 a.m. at LaValle Stadium with a trip to the NCAA tournament on the line. The Retrievers scored six times in each the first and fourth quarters to reach final for the second-straight year.UMBC (7-5), which will be making its sixth America East title game appearance, scored the first four goals of the game and outscored Binghamton, 6-1, in the opening quarter. Senior Matt Gregoire, a first-team all-conference attacker, tallied four of his game-high seven points in the opening period. Max Maxwell added three points (2G, A) in the first, including a blast with 1:46 left to give UMBC a 6-1 lead after one.Binghamton (7-8), which was making its first America East Championship appearance since 2011, cut the deficit to four by halftime, outscoring UMBC, 3-2 in the second quarter. Senior Michael Antinozzi, a second-team all-league choice, scored two of his team-high three goals in the frame to make it 8-4 at the break.The Bearcats kept the momentum in the third quarter. Kelly Donigan scored 3:43 into the period, the first of four Binghamton goals in the third. Second-team all-leaguer Matt Springer netted his 39th goal of the year, the Bearcats' fourth man-up tally of the game, to cap the scoring.Rick Mitchell drew Binghamton within one early in fourth quarter on an unassisted tally with 12:02 left in fourth. But UMBC, which is seeking its first America East title since 2009, scored the next four goals, two by Gregoire, and six of the game's final seven tallies to seal the outcome. Phil Poe dominated the faceoff circle for UMBC, winning 24-of-30 draws and picking up 16 ground balls. UMBC's 24 faceoff wins were a tournament single-game record. America East Player of the Year Lyle Thompson scored from in front with just five seconds left to force overtime and Doug Eich's strike from seven yards out in the extra session sent Albany to the title game for the 11th time since 2003.Albany (10-5) fell behind early as Stony Brook (6-10) scored the first four goals of the game and outscored Albany, 5-1, in the first quarter as five different Seawolves found the back of the cage in the opening frame.The 18th-ranked Great Danes took control in the second, scoring seven times. Lyle and Miles Thompson, brothers who are both Tewaraaton Award candidates, combined for six of Albany's seven scores in the quarter. Miles, a first-team All-America East standout, capped the second-quarter scoring off a feed from fellow first-teamer Ryan Feuerstein with 1:20 to go to give Albany a 9-7 lead at the half.Stony Brook scored four of the first six goals of the fourth quarter to draw even for the first time since early in the second. Chris Hughes buried a shot, his 23rd goal of the year, with 7:42 left to tie the game at 11 apiece. But, Albany, the top scoring team in the nation averaging 16 goals a game, scored the final four goals of the quarter to take a 15-11 advantage into the fourth.After 4:40 of scoreless action, Mike Andreassi, who scored a team-high tying three goals, started a string of five-straight SBU scores. The first four came in a 2:36 span and Kyle Rowe, who won 21-of-33 faceoffs he took, tied the game with 7:44 left in the fourth as won a draw and drove to the front of the cage to nod the game at 15.Andreassi stuck again with 3:44 left in regulation, giving the Seawolves their first lead since early in the second quarter. With time winding down, Albany caused a turnover and got the ball back with just over a minute to play in regulation, before Thompson, who went over the 100 point mark for the second time in his career, scored to send the game to overtime tied at 16. In overtime, after Blaze Riorden saved Challen Rogers' attempt 1:18 in, Lyle Thompson found Eich just outside the crease for the game-winning goal with 3:25 left in OT.Miles Thompson tied a single-game tournament record with seven goals and also added a pair of assists. Lyle Thompson scored five times and added three helpers. Matt Shultz led Stony Brook with five points, scoring three times and adding two assists.
