Stony Brook, UMBC, Maine Sweep Weekend Series

All three America East baseball series resulted in sweeps this weekend as Maine, UMBC and Stony Brook all won three games over their opponents. Recap each of the series below:

Maine (13-19, 4-5 AE) at UMass Lowell (10-13, 3-5 AE)

Maine moved into fourth place in the AE standings with a three-game sweep over UMass Lowell, with all three wins coming by just one run.

The Black Bears tallied three times in the first inning of game one and Tommy Lawrence allowed three earned runs over 7.2 innings while striking out nine to get the win on the mound. Five different Black Bears drove in runs with Shane Bussey getting credit with driving home the game-winner on a single in the sixth. UMass Lowell cut a 5-2 deficit to 5-4 in the eighth, but Charlie Butler closed the door for the Black Bears, not allowing a baserunner in 1.1 innings to get the save.

Game two needed extra frames as the River Hawks erased a 2-0 deficit in the bottom of the fifth. Ian Strom scored the first run, singling then scoring on a wild pitch, while Jon Consolmagno drove in the game-tying run with a single. Maine took the lead in the top of the ninth inning. The Black Bear rally began with two outs when Colin Gay, who had made a game-saving play to end the eighth inning, singled to left. Salcedo drew a walk and Gay advanced to second base. Gay scored when Bussey singled to center field.

More impressive pitching led Maine to the sweep in game three as Jeff Gelinas and Scott Heath combined for a four-hitter in a 2-1 win. All three runs in the game came in the second inning. Maine scored twice in the top of the frame. Heath led off the second inning and was hit. Alex Calbick followed and singled up the middle. Nick Bernardo was also hit to load the bases. Heath scored when Jonathan Salcedo hit a sacrifice fly. Calbick scored the second run of the inning when Shane Bussey singled up the middle.

UMass Lowell got one back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI ground out by Joe O'Keefe. Gelinas allowed one run in six innings on the hill for Maine while Heath earned a three-inning save.

Binghamton (9-18, 4-7 AE) at Stony Brook (20-11, 7-1 AE)

Stony Brook continued to roll, winning its sixth-straight game and improved to 20-5 in its last 25 games with a three-game sweep of Binghamton.

Tim Knesnik tossed 5.2 shutout innings on the mound for the Seawolves in game one to earn the win. Stony Brook scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth with the game still scoreless as Parenty had a two-run triple and Kevin Krause had an RBI single. Stony Brook went on to a 3-1 win.

The Seawolves came from behind to win game two, tying the game at 4-4 in their final at-bat as Kevin Courtney's fly ball was mishandled in the outfield allowing the game-tying run to score. Courtney ended up scoring the game-winning run, coming home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning.

UMBC (9-18, 5-6 AE) at Albany (7-18, 4-7 AE)

UMBC swept all three games from Albany, giving the Retrievers their first-ever sweep of the Great Danes. The Retrievers received a great start from Riley Stephenson in game one, allowing just two runs (one earned) over 7.0 innings of work. UMBC scored single runs in the first, third, seventh and ninth to earn a 4-2 win.

The Retrievers needed late-inning dramatics to take game two, scoring five times in their final at-bat to turn a 5-4 deficit into a 9-5 lead.

 After a strikeout started the inning, the next three four batters reached base and Vince Corbi tied the game with an RBI single. Andrew Casali then scored on a ground out that made it 6-5 with two outs. Brandon Coluccion provided insurance with a bases loaded single that scored two and McCabe followed with an RBI single to make it 9-5.

The Retriever seventh got underway inauspiciously with a strike out, but Lachance drew yet another walk to put the visitors in a position to come back.  Freshman Andrew Casali then rolled a single through the left side to put two runners on and Corbi following by sending a single to center allowing Lachance to score and knot the game at 5-5.

Game three saw more of Coluccio's offense as he went 3-for-5 with with two RBI and two runs as UMBC completed its first-ever sweep of America East rival Albany, defeating the Great Danes, 10-6. Joe Vanderplas tossed six shutout innings for the Retrievers to earn the win.

Hartford (18-13, 6-2 AE) at Rutgers
Game 1: Rutgers 4, Hartford 3 - Box Score
Game 2: Rutgers 4, Hartford 1 - Box Score
Game 3: Hartford 11, Rugers 8 - Box Score

Hartford played a non-conference series on the road against Rutgers and was able to salvage one game of the three-game set. The Hawks out-slugged the Scarlet Knights on Sunday, earning an 11-8 victory after losing a pair of closely-contested games on Friday and Saturday.
