The 2013-14 America East Men’s Indoor Track & Field All-Academic team was announced today. Five of the nine member institutions were represented on the 11-person team. Albany had the most student-athletes recognized on this year's squad as John DeLallo, Andrew Pirnie and Daryl Subran were all selected for their second-straight indoor season. Hartford, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont landed two representatives on the team apiece.
DeLallo (Matietta, N.Y.), a junior physics major, sports a 3.80 cumulative GPA, which has earned him spots on the Indoor (2013) and Outdoor (2013) America East All-Academic teams, to go along with the 2013 America East Spring Scholar-Athlete recognition. He led Albany in 800-meter run (1:52.64) this season, and placed second in the mile, third in the 1000 and second in the distance medley relay at the America East Championships. DeLallo ranks all-time in in Albany history in the 800-meter (9th), 1000-meter (3rd-2:24.63) and the Mile (9th-4:10.52). In addition, he finished out the indoor season seventh on the league’s performance list in the 800 and sixth in the 1000 (2:25.82) and the mile.
A business major at Albany from Hilton, N.Y., Pirnie has earned a 3.49 GPA heading into his junior year spring semester. His academic success has helped him be named to the All-Academic teams in Outdoor Track & Field (2013) and Cross Country (2013). Pirnie has also Placed third in the 800-meter (1:53.23) at the America East Indoor Championships. He also ranks 11th on the America East performance list in the 800-meter and 13th in the 1000 (2:28.71).
Albany senior Subran (Harriman, N.Y.), has compiled a cumulative 3.67 GPA in biology to help him earn his second-consecutive Indoor America East All-Academic spot. He was a member of the first-place 4x400 relay at America East Indoor Championships. Subran also ranks fourth all-time in Albany history (600m-1:22.72) and 14th on the America East performance list (500m-1:05.38).
Hartford’s John Busque, a senior from Manchester, Conn., has raised his overall GPA from a 3.92 to a 3.93 during the fall semester as a physical therapy major. He has been an America East All-Academic selection for cross country (2012, 2013), indoor track & field (2013) and outdoor track & field (2013), and has also earned a spot on Hartford’s President’s List. Busque’s athletic achievements have been recognized regionally as he was slated to the All-New England team with a seventh-place finish in the 3000-meter at the New England Championship. This season, he finished with multiple career-best times that he continued to shatter over the course of the season. Busque’s best times included breaking the 15-minute mark in the 5000 for the first time in his career at the New Englands (14:56.57), a mile time of 4:29.95 at the Scarlet & White Invitational and a 3000-meter time of 8:44.82 at the Valentine Invitational. He also collected a pair of top-10 finishes on the year.
Selected to the America East All-Academic team for indoor track & field in 2013, Hartford’s Erik Quitzau (Blackstone, Mass.) makes another appearance on the squad with a 3.81 GPA in mechanical engineering. Also an America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll and Hartford President’s List member, this senior has set school records for both the 55-meter and 60-meter hurdles. Quitzau broke his own school record in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles at the league championship, crossing the line in 8.61 seconds for seventh overall. He also set the school 55-meter hurdles mark at 8.24 seconds in the season opener at Vermont and also notched a career-best 60-meter dash time of 7.51 seconds at the Joe Donahue Games.
Junior Wilson Adams (Barrington, R.I.) was named a University of Maine Scholar while tallying a 3.43 GPA in biological engineering. This season, he broke a 50-year record in the weight throw with a toss of 19.08 meters (62' 7.25") and shattered it again at the conference meet, winning an individual event title with a hurl of 19.67 meters (64' 6.5"). His championship mark set a new program standard for the Black Bears.
Senior Kelton Cullenberg (Chesterville, Maine) posted a 3.92 GPA in kinesiology & physical education, which earned him the recognition as a 2014 Maine Scholar-Athlete and Dean Smith Award Winner. Coupled with his academic achievements, Cullenberg has also set two new personal-bests in the mile and 3k with times of 4:14.49 and 8:24.97, respectively. In addition, he collected a silver medal in the 5k at the America East Championships.
Zachary Chabot, a native of Manchester, N.H. has successfully maintained a 3.98 GPA in civil engineering over the course of his three years at UNH, which has included a spotless a 4.00 grade-point average this past fall. Chabot notched five top-eight finishes for the Wildcats during the 2013-14 indoor season. The junior claimed two first-place finishes, one in the Joe Donahue Games with the distance medley relay squad (10:21.00) and one with the 4x800 relay (8:00.78) at the Maine-UNH dual meet on Feb. 15. He also posted a seventh-place finish at the America East Indoor Track and Field Championships with the DMR, posting a time of 10:23.10.
New Hampshire junior John Prizzi (Wyckoff, N.J.) compiled a 3.57 GPA in earth science & oceanography. Over the course of the season, the junior distance runner posted victories in four different events, the mile, the 4x800 relay, the distance medley relay, and the 3000-meter race, while collecting six first-place finishes. Prizzi also earned an individual title in the 3000-meter league championship, logging a time of 8:20.43. He also competed in the New England Championships, taking ninth with a mile time of 4:10.43.
Junior Martin Kallur (Falun, Sweden) notched a spotless 4.00 GPA in political science during his time at Vermont. He earned All-Conference honors with a second-place overall finish in the 60-meter hurdles at the America East Championships and placed fifth in the men's pole vault. Kallur grabbed All-New England recognition with a sixth-place 60-meter hurdles slot as he snapped his own school record in the event.
A junior engineering major from Vermont, Ed Simon (Fairfax, Vt.) has tallied a 3.42 GPA. In addition, he finished second overall in the America East men's heptathlon to garner all-conference honors.
Each nominee must be at least in sophomore standing academically, have compiled a minimum 3.3 GPA and have competed in at least 50 percent of the team’s 2013-14 contests or be a significant reserve
Student-athletes worthy of consideration are nominated by member sports information directors and voted on by a committee of SIDs, academic advisors and faculty representatives from all nine member institutions.
