CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Maine Black Bears continue to be the hottest team in the America East, winning four-straight games and earning their second-straight Player of the Week award. Vermont also garnered weekly honors after earning its first win of the season over Dartmouth. Here are the week four award winners:
Player of the Week
Liz Wood, Maine, Jr., F, Catlett, Va.
- Led Maine to a pair of wins at Central Connecticut and home against Harvard, the team’s first win over the Crimson since 1989.
- Led the conference in scoring, averaging 24.0 points per game while ranking second in field goal percentage at 67.9 percent (19-of-28). Also averaged 8.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals per game.
- Notched 23 points and eight rebounds on 10-of-15 shooting to go with four assists and three steals in a road win over Central Connecticut.
- Matched a career-high with 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting with nine rebounds, three assists and four steals in a win over Harvard.
Rookie of the Week
Sydney Smith, Vermont, Fr., G, Vernon Hills, Ill.
- Led all freshmen in scoring, averaging 20.3 points per game on 53.7 percent shooting in a 1-2 week for the Catamounts.
- Shot 12-of-26 (46.2%) from 3-point range.
- Set career-highs in three-straight games, beginning with 18 points on six-of-11 shooting form 3-point range in a loss to No. 21 Syracuse.
- Poured in 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting with four rebounds and two assists in a loss to Sacred Heart.
- Scored a career-high 23 points in UVM's first win of the seaosn against Dartmouth, going 8-of-16 from the floor and hitting three more 3-pointers.
Notes
- Maine beat Harvard for the first time since 1989, 65-46, as Liz Wood matched a career-high with 25 points.
- UNH's Carlie Pogue scored 24 points vs. Daniel Webster after combining for 18 points in her five games of the year.
- America East teams have two wins over Power 5 Conferences (Penn State - Big Ten and Boston College - ACC) for the first time since Vermont beat both Boston College and Wisconsin in 2009-10.
- Maine junior Liz Wood surpassed the 800 career point mark vs. Harvard.
- UMBC's Capree Garner has four 20+ point scoring efforts and has reached double figures in all seven of her games this season.
- UNH beat Boston U. for the first time since 2007, snapping a 13-game losing streak.
