Four America East men's and women's basketball student-athletes have been selected as nominees for the 2015 Allstate National Association of Basketball Coaches and Women's Basketball Coaches Good Works Teams, the organization announced Wednesday. Stony Brook's Rayshaun McGrew and Brittany Snow, Maine's Liz Wood and UMBC's Pandora Wilson represent the America East as nominees.
This prestigious community service award recognizes a distinguished group of student-athletes who have demonstrated a commitment to enriching the lives of others and contributing to the greater good in their communities.
McGrew has been a part of the Miracle League of Long Island in each of the past two years and is active with the Special Olympics Group of Long Island, who visit with the Stony Brook men's basketball team each year. He engages with children each time the Seawolves visit the Stony Brook University Children's Hospital.
A 2013-14 America East All-Academic pick, Snow holds a 3.57 grade-point average (GPA) in psychology and is studying to become a doctor. She serves as the community service officer of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and has volunteered at the Stony Brook University Cancer Center and with the Miracle League of Long Island.
Wood's accomplishments reach far beyond the court as she is heavily involved in serveral organizations and projects outside of her basketball life. A biology major with a premedical concentration in the honors school, Wood was named the 2013-14 America East Women's Basketball Scholar Athlete of the Year, earned a spot on the league's All-Academic team and was honored with the Second Year Academic Award in the School of Biology and Ecology after achiving a 4.0 GPA during the fall semester.
Wilson, one of three captains for the Retrievers for the 2014-15 campaign, helped to organize and lead multiple community service efforts throughout the team’s summer and fall schedules. During that time, Wilson and the Retrievers have found a variety of ways to become engaged in the community, from writing letters to members of the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, to making visits to the Department of Juvenile Services and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
College sports information directors and basketball coaches across the country nominated players who exhibit exceptional leadership skills and an unwavering commitment to volunteerism. From the 158 NABC nominees and 93 WBCA nominees, distinguished voting panels will select two 10- member teams comprised of five student-athletes from the NCAA® Division I level and five student athletes from NCAA Divisions II, III and the NAIA. The final roster of 20 award recipients will be unveiled in February.
Since 2008, Allstate has worked with the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) as sponsor of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, which shines a spotlight on the positive, off-the field impact college football student athletes have on their communities. Through an arrangement with the AFCA, NABC and WBCA, Allstate has been able to expand the Good Works Team® to
also recognize college basketball student-athletes at all levels who donate their time and effort to make a difference off the court. More information about the Allstate NABC Good Works Team® and the Allstate WBCA Good Works Team® is available at www.nabc.org and www.wbca.org.
