Warney Leads SBU to Pair of Impressive Wins, Nets #AEHoops Player of Week

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Stony Brook used a furious second-half comeback to post one of the conference's best wins in recent history Sunday as the Seawolves outscored previously unbeaten and 13th-ranked Washington 31-10 over the final 13:04 of the game to knock off the Huskies, 62-57. The win was the first by an America East team over a ranked program since 2006. Jameel Warney led the charge, scoring 10 of his team-high 15 points in the second half, including the game-winning basket with 30 seconds left. Player of the Week
Jameel Warney, Stony Brook - Jr., Plainfield, N.J.
  • Averaged 12.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.5 blocks to lead Stony Brook to wins over two top-100 RPI teams last week.
  • Had 15 points, including 10 after halftime, eight rebounds and six assists in a win at 13th-ranked Washington Sunday.
  • Scored the game-winning basket with 30 seconds remaining.   
  • Contributed 10 points, 12 rebounds and four assists in a win over reigning Patriot League and preseason favorite American Tuesday.
  • The Player of the Week honor is Warney's fourth of the season and fifth of his career.
Rookie of the Week
Willie Rodriguez, Binghamton - Fr., Orlando, Fla.
  • Scored a career-high 25 points in lone game, a one-point loss at Mount St. Mary’s, last week.
  • Shot 8-of-11 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free throw line.
  • Also grabbed seven rebounds.

  • Stony Brook outscored #13 Washington 31-10 over the final 13:04 to hand the nationally-ranked Huskies their first loss of the year Sunday.
  • Jameel Warney scored 10 of his team-high 15 points in the second half, including the game-winning running bank shot with just under 30 seconds left.
  • The win is the first for an America East team over a ranked opponent since Vermont beat #14 Boston College on Nov. 13, 2006.
  • Albany won its third-straight game Monday, beating Fairfield, 77-66, behind 21 points from Evan Singletary and 19 from Peter Hooley.
  • Singletary is averaging 20.3 points during Albany’s win streak.
  • Stony Brook improved to 6-0 at home with a win over American Tuesday, its second in a row.
  • The Seawolves’ Jameel Warney has 12 double-doubles in 14 games this season.
  • Warney is second in the country averaging 12.4 rebounds per game.
  • Warney’s eight blocks on Dec. 21 was the most since Marqus Blakely had eight on Jan. 21, 2008.
  • UMBC has won two of its last three games after starting 0-9.
  • UNH leads the league in both scoring offense (68.7 ppg) and scoring defense (60.1 papg).
  • Hartford’s seven non-conference wins matches its most since winning eight non-league games during the 2007-08 season.
  • League play resumes Jan. 2 with six teams playing their America East openers this weekend.
