11 America East men's and women's soccer players were honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for for their dual accomplishments on the field and in the classroom.
UMBC senior defender, Marquez Fernandez, highlighted the group as an NSCAA Second Team Scholar All-American.
Fernandez, who will be received his degree in sociology at UMBC's Commencement on Dec. 18, carried grade-point average of 3.68 through the spring semester of 2014.
He started a school-record (tied w/others) 25 games in 2014 and keyed the Retrievers' NCAA Championship record-setting defense, which did not allow a goal in four consecutive road contests. Fernandez scored four goals and added two assists during his 41-game, two-year tenure with the Retrievers.
Fernandez also was an a Scholar All-East Region First Team pick while New Hampshire's David Schlatter earned an honorable mention nod.
Nine women's soccer players were named to Scholar All-East Region teams, led by UMBC's Jessy Brown who landed on the second team.
Three student-athletes were selected to the third team in Hartford's Emma Donnelly and Kristen McAdam and New Hampshire's Caroline Murray. McAdam was the America East Elite 18 award winner are the women's soccer championship.
New Hampshire's Kirsten O'Neil and Hannah Blondin, UMBC's Nikki Boretti, Hartford's Elise Galipo and Albany's Krista Fitzpatrick earned honorable mention nods.
