High Scoring Efforts Net Nwakamma, Leissner #AEHoops MBB Weekly Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Five America East men's basketball teams picked up wins last week, including four over the weekend. Several players had impressive performances to lead their teams to a win. Read about the conference's Week 5 award winners and league notes:  

Player of the Week
Mark Nwakamma, Hartford - Sr., Leander, Texas
  • Averaged 19.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in two games last week.
  • Had the league’s top performance of the season Wednesday at Holy Cross, scoring a career-high 29 points on 14-of-18 shooting from the field.
  • The 14 field goals were the most by an America East player since John Holland in 2010.
  • Had 10 points and eight rebounds against Rider Saturday.

Rookie of the Week
Tanner Leissner, New Hampshire - Fr., Converse, Texas
  • Averaged 18.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in a pair of contests last week.
  • Scored a career-high 21 points on 6-of-8 shooting and added eight boards in a win over Colgate on Sunday.
  • Had a team-high 15 points in a loss to Rutgers.

Notes
  • New Hampshire has won five of its last six games and at 6-3 is off to its best start since the 1994-95 season
  • Albany beat Siena Saturday to win its third straight Albany Cup.
  • UMBC picked up its first win of the season Sunday with a win over Longwood.
  • Peter Hooley and Evan Singletary became the first teammates to go for 20 points in the same game this season.
  • Hartford’s Mark Nwakamma scored 29 points on 14-of-18 shooting on Tuesday. The 14 field goals were the most by an America East player since John Holland had 14 in Feb. of 2010.
  • Stony Brook’s Jameel Warney has eight double-doubles in 10 games this season.
  • Warney leads the country averaging 12.5 rebounds per game.
  • America East teams are 20-12 in non-league home games this year.
  • UMass Lowell’s Jahad Thomas is the first America East player to win three Rookie of the Week honors to start his career since 1993 (Tunji Awojobi, Boston U.).
  • UMBC’s Rodney Elliott, the league’s reigning Rookie of the Year, is out for the season after undergoing shoulder surgery.
