CARY, N.C. – UMBC's pursuit of a men's soccer national championship continues Friday when the Retrievers face 16th-seeded Virginia in the semifinals of the NCAA College Cup at WakeMed Soccer Park at 5 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU and also available on WatchESPN apps.
The Retrievers (14-5-5), the first America East team to ever reach the College Cup, beat Wake Forest, Maryland, Louisville and Creighton all on the road in the tournament's first four rounds to advance to the Final Four. Making the feat more impressive is the fact that they have not allowed a goal all tournament, become the first team to complete four road shutouts en route to the College Cup in NCAA history.
The first unseeded team to reach the College Cup since Charlotte in 2011, UMBC's success has helped make this fall one of the most successful in America East history. The Retrievers are just the league's second team to reach its respective Final Four, joining Albany field hockey.
America East is joined by the ACC as the only conferences to have a school reach the Men’s College Cup, FIeld Hockey Final Four and College World Series (Stony Brook ‘12) since 2012.
The winner of Friday's semifinals will play for the NCAA title on Sunday at 12 p.m.
