CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Over the past week, all five America East schools took part in various meets. Binghamton and Vermont competed in the Bucknell Invitational, Maine travelled to Rhode Island for the URI Invitational, New Hampshire participated in the Rutgers Invitational, and UMBC took their talents to Fairfax, Virginia for the Patriot Invitational. Here are the Week 6 award winners:
Swimmer Performer of the Week
Katie Mann, New Hampshire, Senior, Prince George, British Columbia
- Katie Mann won three individual events over the course of the three-day Rutgers Invitational.
- On the opening day, Mann was the lone Wildcat to record a first place finish. She swam the 200-IM with a time of 2:00.0.
- On the second day, the senior set a meet record in the 400-IM, swimming the race to a pace of 4:13.69. According to CollegeSwimming.com, Mann’s time in the event ranks 14th in division I this year.
- The final day of the meet brought Mann another first place finish, this time in the 200-yard breaststroke. The British Columbia native set another meet-record, finishing the race in 2:12.27, a whole 3.33 seconds ahead of the runner-up finisher. According to CollegeSwimming.com, Mann’s time in the event ranks 18th in division I this year.
- This is the second time this year that Katie Mann has been named the America East Swimmer of the Week.
Diver Performer of the Week
Coco Darelius, UMBC, Junior, Rye, New York
- Coco Darelius is named the America East Diver of the Week for the third time this year.
- Darelius and the UMBC Retrievers took part in the Patriot Invitational in Fairfax, Virginia and placed seventh out of nine competing schools.
- The Rye, N.Y. native placed second in both the three-meter and one-meter dives with the scores 255.60, and 249.55 respectively.
Swimming & Diving Notes
- Binghamton and Vermont both travelled to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania for the Bucknell Invitational.
- For the Bearcats, seniors Caitlin Kelly and Corrine Zotter both won individual events. Kelly remained undefeated in the 50-freestyle this year, winning the race in 23.13. Zotter notched the top spot in the 100-breaststroke in 1:02.40. Her result met the NCAA B Cut Standard, a landmark she has now made two consecutive years. Binghamton placed eighth out of nine competing teams.
- Vermont’s highlights are held by freshman Shannon Cowley who set new Vermont varsity and freshman records in the 200-breaststroke, finishing at 2:19.90 to take ninth place. The Catamounts as a team ended up placing sixth among the competing schools.
- The Maine Black Bears finished second in their meet down in Kingston, Rhode Island. Freshman Emma Pontius grabbed the runner up spot in both the 100-butterfly (57.94), and 200-butterfly (2:09.19). Fellow freshman Chloe Adams grabbed third place in the 500-freestyle (5:05.63).
- For New Hampshire, senior Katie Mann claimed three individual victories of the three-day meet in Piscataway, New Jersey. She ranked best in the America East, winning and finishing the 400-IM and 200-breaststroke in 4:13.69 and 2:12.37. Mann also captured the 200-IM first place mark in 2:00.0.
- The UMBC Retrievers finished seventh at the Patriot Invitational hosted by George Mason University. New Rochelle, New York native Emily Escobedo finished the event with three victories. The sophomore won the 200-IM with a time of 2:03.88. Escobedo also won the 400-IM and 200-breaststroke in 4:24.22 and 2:15.20.
- There are no America East schools swimming in competition this upcoming week.
- This week marked the end of the 2014 portion of the season for four of the five America East schools. The University of Maine has the lone meet remaining this calendar year on December 6th at Bates.
