Belanger, Watkins Earn Women's #AEHoops Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Through two weeks of the college hoops season, America East teams have posted a 15-15 record and the University of New Hampshire sits as the lone unbeaten team in the conference. With the 3-0 record, the Wildcats earned their first Player of the Week honor of the season. Hartford and UMBC each started 3-0 before falling on Sunday. Here are the week 2 award winners:

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Elizabeth Belanger, New Hampshire, Jr., G, Acton, Mass.

  • Averaged a league-best 23.0 points per game to go with nine rebounds and four assists in a 2-0 week for the Wildcats.
  • Posted a career-high 27 points along with 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season in a win at Howard.
  • Poured in 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds while dishing out five assists in a win over Brown.
  • Ranked second in the league in rebounding and fourth in assists while shooting 44% from the floor.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Imani Watkins, Binghamton, Fr., Guard, High Point, N.C.

  • Led all freshmen in scoring last week with 19 points per game along with four rebounds and two assists.
  • Scored a team-high 19 points in Binghamton’s lone game of the week, a loss to BIG EAST foe Xavier.
  • Also grabbed four rebounds and has two assists in the contest.
  • Has scored at-least 19 points in each of the first three game and is averaging a team-best 19.7 points per game this season.

Notes

  • New Hampshire is off to its first 3-0 start since 2005-06 after a, 60-57, win over Brown Saturday night.
  • UMBC's Capree Garner has reached double figures in all four games this season.
  • Albany's Shereesha Richards recorded her UAlbany program record 20th career 20-point game in a loss at Western Kentucky.  
  • Shereesha Richards was named to the Preseason WNIT All-Tournament Team. The Great Danes lost in the semifinals at Western Kentucky.
  • Hartford started 3-0 for the 7th time in 16 years under head coach Jennifer Rizzotti before falling at Lafayette on Sunday.
  • UMBC had its first 3-0 start since 1989-90.
  • Hartford will take part in the Cancun Challenge Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week.
  • America East teams are playing conference favorites from five different leagues and 10 NCAA participants from 2013-14.
  • Imani Watkins is the first Binghamton Bearcat to earn back-to-back Rookie of the Week selections since Jasbriell Swain in 2010-11.
