Vermont Sweeps Week 5 #AESD Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Vermont was the lone America East school racing over this past week.  The Catamounts travelled to Smithfield, R.I. and swam against Central Connecticut State University and Merrimack on the 15th, then travelled to Bryant on the 16th to race against the Bryant Bulldogs.  Here are the fourth weekly award winners of the season:

Swimmer Performer of the Week
Shannon Cowley, Vermont, Freshman, Ann Arbor, Michigan

  • Won the 100-breaststroke (1:05.28), setting the pool record in the double meet against Central Connecticut and Merrimack.
  • In addition, Cowley was part of the winning relay squad that set the pool record in the 400 medley (3:55.55) as part of the dual meet. 
  • As part of the dual meet, Cowley took second place in both the 200 breast (2:25.89) and 200 individual medley (2:14.45)
  • Vermont took down both Central Connecticut and Merrimack; the Catamounts bested the Blue Devils 163-130, and the Warriors 136-56.
  • Against the Bryant Bulldogs, Cowley collected three individual victories.  The freshman took home the 100-breaststroke (1:06.43), 200-breaststroke (2:25.37), and 200 IM (2:11.68).
  • The Catamounts defeated the Bulldogs 145.5 to 116.5.

Diver Performer of the Week
Maggie Preston, Vermont, Junior, West Hartford, Conn.

  • This is Maggie Preston’s third straight selection as the America East Diver of the Week.
  • Maggie Preston won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events for the fourth consecutive meet.
  • Preston scored a 232.72 on the one-meter dive, and 243.97 on the three-meter dive.
  • As a team, Vermont defeated both CCSU and Merrimack in the meet at Forbush Natatorium.  The Catamounts took down the Blue Devils 163-130 and the Warriors fell 136-56.
  • Preston did not dive in the meet against the Bryant Bulldogs.

Swimming & Diving Notes

  • With two meet wins this past week, the Catamounts has extended their winning streak to seven games, and improve to 7-1 on the year.
  •  In the tri-meet against CCSU and Merrimack, Junior Andie Blaser notched a pair of victories in the 100-butterfly (57.51) and 100-freestyle (52.89).  Ilsa Feierabend claimed first place in the 200-backstroke (2:06.70).
  • The gathering was UVM’s Rally Against Cancer Meet.  The Catamounts helped raise support for breast cancer awareness by wearing pink swim caps and t-shirts.  All proceeds from the initiative benefited the Vermont Cancer Center.
  • Against the Bryant Bulldogs, Vermont won nine events and collected its seventh straight victory.  Shannon Cowley notched three individual wins, sweeping the breaststroke events, and placing first in the 200 IM.  Junior Andrew Blaser and freshman Maddie Blumefield posted a pair of victories each against Bryant as well.
  • In the upcoming week, all five America East institutions are in action.  Binghamton will do battle against St. Bonaventure’s; Maine is set to take part in the URI Invitational; UMBC travels to Fairfax, Virginia for the George Mason Invite; New Hampshire will swim in the three-day Rutgers Invitational; and Vermont will head to Lewisburg, Pa. for the Bucknell Invitational.
