BALTIMORE – For the third-straight year and the fourth time in the last five, UMBC is America East's men's soccer champion. The top-seeded Retrievers scored a pair of unanswered goals in the second half to down second-seeded Hartford, 2-1, in the conference's championship game Saturday evening at Retriever Soccer Park.

The Retrievers, the first America East team to win three-straight conference titles since Boston University won five straight from 1993-97, earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, where an America East team has reached the second round in 10 of the last 13 seasons, including the Retrievers three times in the last four seasons.

Redshirt freshman Gregg Hauck earned the championship’s Most Outstanding Player trophy after tallying the game-winning goal in the 76th minute, his second score of the tournament.

Neither team threatened for the majority of the first half as only four total shots were put on net. The Retrievers’ totaled three of those attempts but Hartford’s David MacKinnon, a second-team All-America East selection, stopped each one.

Hartford (11-6-2) took advantage of its best opportunity of the period as time wound down. Udi Cohen, a second-team all-leaguer, blasted a shot on net that went off the cross bar and Jeff Tyron, an All-Championship choice, sent home the rebound in the 38th minutes on a bounce over UMBC goalkeeper Billy Heavner to give Hartford a 1-0 lead, which it took into the locker room.

UMBC (12-5-3) continued to control play in the second half, threatening to score several times in the period’s opening minutes. Stephen Ho hit the crossbar 3:49 into the frame while Jordan Becker and Kay Banjo hit shots on net just a few minutes later, 1:36 apart, that were stopped by MacKinnon.

The Retrievers, who extended their league-record unbeaten streak to 25 games against America East teams (20-0-5), finally broke through in the 63rd minute. Becker, a first-team all-league defender, sent a feed into the box that was headed home by America East Defender of the Year Oumar Ballo to tie the game 1-1.

The Hawks, who were seeking their first league title since 1999, went a man down in the 69th minute, when Rohan Roye received his second yellow card, and were forced to play shorthanded for the rest of the game. Hauck took advantage of the opportunity with just 14:22 left, weaving through the undermanned Hawks and blasting a shot home from 18 yards to put his team up 2-1. The goal, just his second of the season, was his second in as many tournament games.

Tyron had the Hawks’ best chance to tie the game in the 85th minute, but his shot was blocked and UMBC, winner of six-straight games, held on for its fourth America East title in program history.

Joining Hauck and Tryon on the All-Championship team are teammates Ballo, Mamadou Kansaye and Marquez Fernandez, Hartford’s Connor Yeaney and Romario Jones,  Binghamton’s Zach Galluzzo and Robert Moewes, Vermont’s Daniel Giron and Brian Wright, Albany’s Martin Gorrie and Stony Brook’s Martin Giordano.

UMBC’s Billy Heavner became the first men’s soccer Elite 18 award winner. The award is given to a student-athlete in each sport who exemplifies excellence both in their sport and in the classroom. Heavner is a junior with a perfect 4.00 GPA while majoring in financial economics.

The Retrievers will learn their tournament draw during the NCAA selection show Monday at 1 p.m. The show will be broadcast on NCAA.com.
