For the second-straight year, UMBC and Hartford will decide the America East men's soccer title after both teams won semifinal contests Wednesday to advance to the league's championship game. The top-seeded Retrievers scored three unanswered goals to down fifth-seeded Vermont, 3-1, in Baltimore while second-seeded Hartford got two goals from Connor Yeaney, including the game winner in overtime, to beat third-seeded Binghamton, 2-1 in extra time, in West Hartford. The America East title game will be played Saturday night at 7 p.m. at UMBC. The game can be seen for free at AmericaEast.TV.In Baltimore, both teams got on the board in the game's first 12 minutes. Vermont (8-9-2) started the scoring as Brian Wright, a first-team All-America East forward, got in alone on UMBC keeper Billy Heaver and tallied his league-best ninth goal of the year to give the Catamounts a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute.UMBC (11-5-3), which will be making its fifth title game appearance in the last six years, evened the score just 1:20 later on Greg Hauck's first career goal. The redshirt freshman buried a shot from 25 yards out after being set up by Oumar Ballo, the league's Defender of the Year, and Jordan Becker to even the score 1-1.Kay Banjo, the league's Striker of the Year, broke the deadlock in the 30th minute on a highlight reel goal. America East's leading point getter with 22, Banjo deflected a cross from Becker into the right side of the net with his heel to give UMBC a 2-1 lead, which it would take into the locker room at the half.Vermont, which was seeking its first title game appearance since 2007, increased its pressure on Heavner, putting four shots on UMBC’s keeper in the second half. Wright and Bernard Yeboah, who had scored the game winner in Vermont’s quarterfinal win over Albany, registered shots 23 seconds apart in the 81st minute, but Heavner saved them both. Michael Scott, an America East All-Academic choice, then put the game away with an insurance tally with 6:58 left in regulation to put the game away for UMBC, which extended its league-record unbeaten streak against America East foes to 24 games (20-0-4).In Hartford, neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first half. Hartford (11-5-2) Hawks controlled play for the majority of the period, outshooting Binghamton, 10-2, couldn’t beat Bearcat goalkeeper Robert Moewes, the league’s Goalkeeper of the Year, who had two stops in the stanza and finished with six for the game. The Hawks nearly took a 1-0 lead on free kick in the 25th minute on Javoni Simms’ free kick from 20 yards out, but Moewes was well positioned to stop the shot. He again kept the game scoreless in the 42nd minute, tipping Jeff Tryon’s attempt over the crossbar. The game remained scoreless until Yeaney, also an All-Academic choice, deflected in a corner kick from Rohan Roye in the 74th minute. Binghamton (5-14-1), which was seeking its first title game showing since 2007 as well, responded just 1:36 later when Zach Galluzo took Tommy Moon’s feed and blasted a shot past Hartford keeper David MacKinnon with his left foot from 16 yards out. Regulation ended with the score deadlocked 1-1 and remained that way until Yeaney ended it in the game’s 100th minute, picking up a loose ball in front of the net and beating MacKinnon to send Hartford to the title game for the third time in four years.
