Harper and Darelius Take Home Week 2 #AESD Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Three America East schools were in action over this past week.  Maine travelled to take on Rhode Island and Providence in back-to-back days to begin their season.  UMBC took a trip to Washington D.C. to swim against George Washington, and New Hampshire took a trip south to Boston to meet up with Northeastern.  Here are the second weekly award winners of the season:

Swimmer Performer of the Week
Jessica Harper, New Hampshire, Freshman, Easthampton, Mass.

  • Jessica Harper notched two individual victories in New Hampshire’s meet against Northeastern. 
  • Harper won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:07.06, what was best among America East times from this past week.  Harper also won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:25.25.
  • The freshman also took park in the 400-yard relay team that won with a time of 3:35.51.  Harper competed in that event with teammates Oneida Cooper, Liza Baykova, and Sarah Broderick.
  • New Hampshire as a team was bested by Northeastern 161-119.

Diver Performer of the Week
Coco Darelius, UMBC, Junior, Rye, N.Y.

  • Coce Darelius won both the one-meter and three-meter events in UMBC’s meet against George Washington in Washington D.C.
  • Darelius recorded a 324.00 score on her three-meter dive.  She broke her own school record in the three-meter dive that she set last week on the first day of the CCSA North Invite.
  • Darelius recorded a 294.98 score on her one-meter dive, breaking UMBC’s school record which was previously held by Ashley Houghton.
  • UMBC defeated George Washington and won the meet 160-134.

Swimming & Diving Notes

  • The Black Bears travelled to Rhode Island on October 24th and fell to URI 181.50 to 118.50.  The leaders for Maine included Emma Pontius and Naja Harvey, who combined won 5 individual events.  Summer Nickerson also won the 100-yard backstroke (59:35), and Hayli Weitz captured the top spot in the 3-meter dive with a score of 218.70.
  • On the 25th Maine travelled to Providence and defeated the Friars 163 to 115.  Naja Harvey, Chloe Adams, and Emma Pontius combined to win four total events.
  • UMBC travelled down to Washington D.C. and dispatched George Washington with a 160-134 victory.  Last weeks Swimmer of the Week Emily Escobedo won two events, along with teammates Allie Caulfield and Brenda Rhodes.  Coco Darelius once again swept the diving events, recording record scores in both the three-meter and one-meter.
  • New Hampshire fell to Northeastern 161-119 despite a trio of Wildcats winning a pair of individual events.  The trio that led New Hampshire was Junior Bettina Caspersen, along with freshmen Jessica Harper and Liza Baykova.  Caspersen won the 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard IM; Harper took the 200-yard butterfly, and 1,000 yard freestyle; and Baykova clocked first in the 100 and 200 yard freestyle.
  • Binghamton begins their season with their first official meet beginning on Halloween when they will host the University of Massachusetts.  Vermont heads to Loudonville, N.Y. for a meet with the Siena Saints on November 1st.
