UMBC's Escobedo and Darelius Win Week 1 #AESD Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Two-thirds of America East’s women’s swimming and diving squads have kicked off their 2014-15 seasons. New Hampshire traveled to Vermont for a meet and the Catamounts downed the defending America East champs.  UMBC had two meets over the past week, and finished with a split decision, falling to Navy and winning the CCSA North Invite. Here are the first weekly award winners of the season:

Swimmer Performer of the Week
Emily Escobedo, UMBC, Sophomore, New Rochelle, N.Y.

  • Against Navy on October 15th, Emily Escobedo won three events against Navy on Oct. 15, taking home gold in the the 100 and 200 breaststrokeand 200 individual medley. 
  • During the CCSA North Invite through October 18-19, Escobedo won the 100 and 200 breaststroke, and the 200 and 400 IM.
  • The sophomore also took part in UMBC’s 200 medley relay win against Navy, and the Retriever’s 400 medley Relay win during the CCSA North Invite.

Diver Performer of the Week
Coco Darelius, UMBC, Junior, Rye, N.Y.

  • UMBC’s  Coco Darelius broke the school’s record in the three-meter dive, registering a score of 300.60, at the CCSA North Invite.  Ashley Houghton held the record previously.
  • She also won the one-meter dive with a score of 274.80.
  • Darelius qualified for the NCAA Zone competition in the spring.  She is the third retriever to qualify this year.

Swimming & Diving Notes

  • UMBC took part in two meets over the past week; first was at Navy where the Retrievers fell just short of Navy 151 to 138.  During the meet against Navy, the Retrievers swept both relays on the day, and Emily Escobedo led UMBC with three individual wins in the 100 breast  (1:11.73) and the 200 breast (2:33.78), as well as the 200 IM (2:21.78).
  • Retrievers second meet of the week was the CCSA North Invite in Baltimore, Md.  Emily Escobedo recorded four individual wins on the weekend: 200 IM (2:06.68), 100 Breast (1:05.25), 200 breast (2:18.57) and the 400 IM (4:30.20).  Coco Darelius of the Retrievers took home the price in the three-meter diving and one-meter diving.  With the win at the CCSA North Invite, UMBC Head Coach Chad Cradock recorded his 200th win as a coach, becoming the all-time winningest coach in program history.
  • New Hampshire traveled to Burlington, Vermont and won seven events, but in the end, The Catamounts won the event 157-143.  The Wildcats individual wins came from senior Oneida Cooper, junior Bettina Caspersen, and sophomore Sarah Broderick, and freshman Jessica Harper.  Harper, a freshman, started her collegiate career with three individual wins in the 100-yard backstroke, 500-yard freestyle, and 200-yard medley.
  • In the meet against New Hampshire, Vermont won nine events and set a new pool record in the 400 free relay in the process.  In addition, UVM swept both diving events, with Maggie Preston taking first in both the one and three meter dive.
  • Three schools are taking part in meets this upcoming week: On October 25th, UMBC travels to George Washington, New Hampshire heads to Northeastern, and Vermont makes its way to Providence.
