UNH, UMBC Win on Opening Night of Conference Play

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - On the first night of conference play, UMBC and New Hampshire took home four-set and three-set victories respectively on Friday. Here is a recap of those two matches along with previews for the two conference matches on Sunday.

Friday, Sept. 27

  • UMBC won three-straight sets after dropping the opening set to Stony Brook.
  • Sherelle Walker recorded a season-best 17 kills for the Retrievers, as UMBC out-hit Stony Brook .159 to .068
  • The Retrievers had 79 digs in the contest, with four players reaching double figures including Ali Goc who had a double-double with 10 kills and a match-high 19 digs.
  • Stony Brook was led by Kaitlin Fletcher's 11 kills and 13 digs.

  • New Hampshire captured its fourth-straight conference-opener with a straight-set win over UMass Lowell, which was hosting its first America East contest in school history.
  • Sophomore Tori Forrest notched her third-straight double-double for the Wildcats with 14 kills and 12 digs.
  • Setter Taylor Dunklau captained the offense with 38 assists as the team finished with a .211 hitting percentage.
  • UMass Lowell was paced by Ana Anadon's 11 kills and Carolyn Eddy's 11 digs.

Sunday, Sept. 29

Hartford at Providence - 1 p.m.

  • Head coach Alex Temkin leads Hartford in his second year at the helm of the Hawks. The team was picked seventh in the preseason poll.
  • The Hawks are led by one of the top setters in the conference in Jackie Tamburri who averaged 9.42 assists per set and helping Hartford to a .168 hitting percentage as a team.
  • Providence is off to its best start through 16 matches since starting 8-8 in 2008-09.
  • Defense has been the name of the game for the Friars who are second in the conference in opponent hitting percentage at .177.

Binghamton at Albany - 5 p.m.

  • The first weekend of the year has a rematch of the 2012 title game and the top-two teams in the preseason poll. Binghamton defeated Albany on the Great Danes home court to take the America East title last year.
  • The Great Danes have won five-straight regular-season titles, losing only a total of five conference matches in that time.
  • Albany has a young squad in search of its first win, welcoming nine newcomers this year.
  • Binghamton won its third America east title in 2012 and return four starters from last year's team including Co-Setter of the Year Amanda Dettmann.
