CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Volleyball season begins Friday and all eight America East teams will take the court, playing a total of 24 matches over the next three days.
Reigning champion and preseason No. 2 pick Binghamton will be the first team on the court, taking on St. John's at 1 p.m. The Bearcats return four starters and two-time all-conference libero Xiomara Ortiz and America East Co-Setter of the Year Amanda Dettmann.
Preseason favorite, Albany, makes a trip to the west coast where the Great Danes battle No. 12 UCLA at 10 p.m. ET. Albany has won five-straight regular-season titles. Albany plays a very challenging first month of the season, with six matches against NCAA tournament teams from 2012 and not playing a home contest until Sept. 28 against Binghamton.
UMass Lowell has the honor of playing the first volleyball match on AmericaEast.TV, facing Manhattan Friday at 7 p.m. It is also the first home game for the River Hawks in any sport at the Division I level.
Other matches on Friday include Hartford taking on Cleveland State and Eastern Michigan in a pair of matches, while Providence takes on DePaul and New Hampshire faces Lehigh. First-year head coach Coley Pawlikowski lead Stony Brook in her first match against Sacred Heart at 5 p.m. UMBC takes on Ole Miss at 4 p.m.
