STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- For fifth time since 2006, Albany and UMBC will decide the America East men's lacrosse title as the two teams both overcame large deficits to advance to the league title game with semifinal wins Thursday at Stony Brook's LaValle Stadium. Third-seeded UMBC overcame a four-goal fourth quarter deficit to knock off second-seeded Hartford 15-13, in the first semi, while top-seeded Albany came back from five down to defeat fourth-seeded Stony Brook, 17-15, in the nightcap.The Great Danes and Retrievers will face off in the 2013 America East Men's Lacrosse title game Saturday at 10 a.m. at LaValle Stadium with a trip to the NCAA tournament on the line. The game will be nationally televised on ESPNU and the WatchESPN app.In the first semifinal, UMBC (7-7) controlled the first half, scoring four the of the game's first five goals. The Retrievers, who will make their fifth-ever title game appearance and first since 2009, got two scores from Dave Brown in the spurt, including a blast 42 seconds into the second quarter to give his team a 4-1 lead.Hartford (7-7) got goals from Kevin O'shea, a first-team All-America East selection and Garrett Dollard to close the deficit to 5-3 midway through the second quarter. But the Retrievers, who outshot the Hawks 24-17 in the half, grew their lead back to four (7-3) on goals by Joe Lustgarten and America East Rookie of the Year Pat Young. The Hawks' Jack Bobzien then swung the momentum. He scored with 18 seconds left in the second quarter to make the score 7-4 UMBC at halftime. The America East All-Rookie choice then scored the first two goals of the third quarter, part of a 4-0 Hartford run as it took its first lead, 9-8, on Austin Gorman's score with 4:20 left in the third. Gorman's score kicked off a 5-1 run by Hartford, capped by Jared Franz' score, who put Hartford up 13-9 with just over 10 minutes left in the game.But, UMBC fought back, scoring six unaswered goals in the game's final 5:46. The run was powered by faceoff man Phil Poe, who won 10 of 11 faceoffs in the quarter. Lustgarten had three of his four goals during the 6-0 run, including the game winner with 55 second left and an insurance tally 21 seconds later. Lustgarten led UMBC with four goals and two assists while Bobzien's five scores and an assist powered Hartford. Each goalkeeper had double-digit saves with the Retrievers' Wes DiRito stopping 10 shots and the Hawk' Frank Piechota, the first-team all-league goalie stopping 13.In the second semifinal, Stony Brook (7-9) surprised top-seeded Albany by jumping out to a quick 4-1 lead three-quarters of the way through the first quarter. Brody Eastwood scored two of his game-high seven goals in the span. The Seawolves kept up their pace, scoring three straight after an Albany score and led 7-2 2:10 into the second quarter.Albany (12-4), the 12th-ranked team in the country, rode its top-ranked offense to outscore SBU 5-2 in the second quarter and cut the deficit to three by halftime. Lyle Thompson, the America East Player of the Year, tallied two goals and an assist in the span. Just before the break, Eastwood added his fifth of the frame to make the score 10-7 Stony Brook at the break.The Great Danes, who are seeking their fifth America East crown but first since 2007, came out strong in the second half scoring five of the frame's first six scores. The run was capped by Tim Cox's score, which gave Albany a 12-11 lead with 4:16 left in the third, its first lead since the first minute of the game.Stony Brook fought back however, scoring three straight scores to take a two-goal lead with 10 minutes left. But that's when Ty Thompson took over, scoring three goals down the stretch as the Great Danes scored five of the games final six goals to seal the outcome. Ty Thompson finished with four goals and an assist while his teammate and cousin Lyle had three goals and three assists to up his season-point total to 99.
