The Stony Brook softball team had its 2013 season come to an end on Saturday with a 6-0 loss to Oregon State in the NCAA Columbia Regional. The America East champions finished an outstanding campaign with 35 wins.
Playing its second power conference opponent in as many days, Stony Brook again kept the game tight in the early stages.
Oregon State (34-23) scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the second when Desiree Beltran turned on an inside pitch and golfed it over the left field fence for a solo home run.
Stony Brook starter Allison Cukrov (Irvine, Calif.) kept the score at 1-0 into the fourth and appeared to have things under control after getting two quick outs to open the frame.
But Oregon State was not finished yet. After two consecutive singles and a walk loaded the bases, the Beavers’ Lea Cavestany lined the ball into left to bring in a run to make it 2-0. A bases-loaded hit-by-pitch tacked on a third run, before Elizabeth Santana delivered the decisive blow with a double into the right-centerfield gap to clear the bags and make it 6-0.
Stony Brook (35-25) mustered two hits in the game (both singles), one from sophomore Shayla Giosia (Runnemede, N.J.) and one from sophomore Bria Green (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.).
Friday, May 17 - Missouri 3, Stony Brook 0 - Box Score
The Stony Brook softball team (35-24) battled toe-to-toe with No. 6 overall seed Missouri, holding the Tigers off the board into the fifth inning, before succumbing to a 3-0 defeat on Friday at the NCAA Columbia Regional before a crowd of 1,080 at University Field.
Neither team was able to generate much offense through the first four innings as Stony Brook starter Allison Cukrov (Irvine, Calif.) and Mizzou hurler Nicole Hudson battled to prevent the game's first run.
Cukrov had allowed only one hit into the fifth, before the Missouri (36-11) attack finally broke through. With a pair of runners aboard, Missouri's Jenna Marston crushed a pitch over the right-centerfield fence to put the hosts in front, 3-0.
Stony Brook recorded its first hit in the sixth, an infield single by sophomore Shayla Giosia (Runnemede, N.J.), and added a second hit in the seventh on a single by freshman Kellie Reynolds (Paso Robles, Calif.). Stony Brook could not string any momentum together in either case, however, leaving five runners on base in the game.
Both teams finished with just two hits as Cukrov (15-15) and Hudson (11-5) each battled to complete-game efforts. Cukrov struck out four batters and walked six, while Hudson fanned one and walked two.
