Men's Lacrosse League Play Continues This Weekend

Two men's lacrosse teams will try to improve to 3-0 in league play and three others will look to avoid 0-3 starts as America East play continues this weekend.

UMBC hosts Vermont on Saturday at 1 p.m., while Stony Brook entertains Binghamton at 4 p.m. Albany hosts Hartford Sunday at 1 p.m.

UMBC (3-6, 0-1 AE) and Vermont (3-7, 0-1 AE) each go for their first league wins when the two teams square off in Baltimore Saturday. The Retrievers have won all nine all-time meetings with Catamounts, but the last three games have been decided by a total of five goals.

UMBC, which has never lost consecutive America East games, dropped a heartbreaker, a 15-14 overtime decision, to Hartford in its league opener last weekend, a game in which they led by three in the fourth quarter. Pat Young paced the Retievers with five points, including four goals.

Vermont, which leads the league killing 85.7 percent of its penalties, fell 19-10 to Stony Brook in its opener Saturday. Graham Horvath and Drew Philie, who have combined for 45 goals on the season, each scored three times.

Stony Brook (6-4, 1-0 AE) tries to improve to 2-0 in league play for the fourth-straight year while Binghmaton tries to pick up its first league win when the two teams meet on Long Island Saturday. The Seawolves have won eight straight against the Bearcats, including a 13-5 decision last season.

The Seawolves, winners of five of their last seven games, beat Vermont, 19-10, in their league opener last week. Jeff Tundo, who ranks second among league leaders with 46 points, tallied six points on three goals and three assists, while Brody Eastwood had four goals and an assist.

Binghamton, which has one of the league's best back lines as the Bearcats and lead the conference with an 9.89 team GAA, dropped its league opener to Albany last weekend, 21-8. Michael Antinozzi led the Bearcats with three goals, while  Matt Springer leads the way with 17 overall this season.

The lone battle of teams unbeaten in America East play, happens Sunday when #20 Albany (6-3, 1-0 AE) hosts Hartford (4-4, 1-0 AE). The Great Danes, the nation's top-scoring team averaging 15.1 goals per outing, beat the Hawks in 12-11 overtime thriller last season.

Albany, which plays at #10/11 Johns Hopkins Friday night on ESPNU before hosting Hartford Saturday, are ranked 20th in both national polls. Winner of five of itheir last six games, Binghamton beat Binghamton 21-8i in their league opener last week. Lyle Thompson, the nation's top scorer averaging 7.11 points per game, led the way with nine points.

Hartford has won four of its last five games to get to the .500 mark. The Hawks posted a thrilling 15-14 overtime win over UMBC last weekend, overcoming a three-goal fourth-quarter deficit. Kevin O'Shea scored five goals, while Jack Bobzien, who's fifth in the conference with 31 points, racked up a goal and five assists en route to winning his third America East Rookie of the Week honor.
