CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The sixth week of America East baseball begins on Saturday as teams will start half of round-robin play. Through the first five weeks, Maine holds on to first place with an 11-3 record followed by three teams separated by 0.5 games in Binghamton, Albany and Hartford.

UMBC took two of three in the first meeting between the two teams in Baltimore on conference-opening weekend. The Bearcats boast the league’s leading hitter in Jake Thomas, who is batting .400 with 11 RBI in 14 conference games. UMBC won the first two games of the three games series to start the season as Denis Mikush and John Cohn combined to shut out the Bearcats. Mikush will get the start in game two of the series.

Maine and Stony Brook meet in Orono after the Black Bears won two of three at Stony Brook to start the conference season. In the first game of that series, Maine’s Tommy Lawrence and Stony Brook’s Brandon McNitt put on a pitching clinic. Both went all nine innings with Lawrence shutting the Seawolves out. McNitt allowed only one run on four hits as Maine won 1-0.

Hartford (11-22, 8-7) at Albany (14-15-1, 8-7)

Hartford won two of three against Albany to start the season and both teams enter the weekend series with identical 8-7 conference records. The Hawks’ game three starter, Sean Newcomb, ranks third in the country with 13.15 strikeouts per nine innings. Newcomb struck out seven Great Danes in five innings the first time the teams met. Albany has won seven of its last 10 games overall, including a sweep of Stony Brook.
