Battle for Playoff Spots Heats Up in Women's Lacrosse Saturday

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – As we head into the second half of the women’s lacrosse season, there is still a lot left to be determined before the championship May 2 and 4 at the highest seed. Stony Brook can become the first team to clinch a spot in the championship with a win and a loss by Binghamton on Saturday, but there the other three spots are still very much up for grabs.

The Seawolves can clinch a spot in the America East Championship with a win over New Hampshire coupled with a loss by Binghamton on Saturday. Stony Brook cracked the top-10 on the IWLCA Coaches’ Poll, coming in at No. 10 last week while staying at No. 11 in the deBeer Media Poll. Midfielder Demianne Cook leads the nation in goals at 4.62 per game while the team leads the country in scoring defense, allowing only 5.08 per game.

New Hampshire is coming off another heartbreaking loss, falling 10-9 in overtime to No. 19 Boston College. The Wildcats have had seven of their 12 games decided by two goals or fewer, including a pair of overtime games. New Hamspshire has suffered four one-goal losses this year. Jenny Simpson paces the UNH offense with 39 points on the year.

Binghamton (2-8, 1-2)  at Boston U. (4-6, 1-2), 1 p.m.

Danielle Etrasco is second in the country for the Terriers, averaged 3.70 goals per game helping Boston U. average 10.90 goals per game as a team. The Terriers have dropped two of their first three conference games, but look to get on track as they host Binghamton at Nickerson Field.

Binghamton is fighting for a spot in the America East Championship as the squad sits tied for the final spot at 1-2 with New Hampshire. The Wildcats own the tiebreak with a head-to-head victory, and Vermont is just a half game behind at 1-3. Freshman Erin McNulty is fourth in the conference at 7.80 saves per game.

UMBC (8-4, 2-1) at Albany (7-4, 2-1), 1 p.m.

UMBC and Albany enter Saturday tied for second in the league standings at 2-1, with both teams losing games to Stony Brook. The Retrievers have the second-best RPI of any team in the conference at 28 and allow less than 10 goals per game.

Albany is second in the league in both scoring offense (13.55) and scoring defense (7.57) behind Stony Brook. Rachael Burek ranks first in the league and third in the nation in assists per game at 3.20.
