CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the second-straight week, three different teams were represented in the America East weekly baseball awards, the conference office announced Monday.
Maine junior Eric White was named Player of the Week, Hartford sophomore Sean Newcomb earned Pitcher of the Week, and Stony Brook freshman Daniel Zamora was named Rookie of the Week.
No team has registered a sweep through the first three weekends of conference play, but Maine has won each of its first three series. The Black Bears are 6-3 and hold a one game lead on Binghamton for first place in the conference. UMBC, Albany, Stony Brook and Hartford are all tied at 4-5.
White (Brewer, Maine) led the Black Bears to a 2-1 weekend, hitting a conference-best .545 with five runs scored and two RBI. White’s five runs scored led the conference for the week and he also was a perfect two-for-two in stolen bases. The third baseman had hits in each of Maine’s three games, including two multi-hit games. In Maine's 7-4 win on Saturday, he went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
Newcomb (Middleboro, Mass.) led the Hawks to a 4-3 victory over the Binghamton Bearcats with seven spectacular innings on the hill. The sophomore lefty struck out a career-high and America East season-high 12 batters while walking just three. Newcomb allowed one hit in his seven innings of work, while the lone run he allowed was unearned. For the season, Newcomb holds a 2-3 record and a 4.91 ERA, allowing 14 earned runs in 25.2 innings of work on 18 hits with a team-high 41 strikeouts.
Zamora (Levittown, N.Y.) pitched Stony Brook to a series win over UMBC, throwing 6-1/3 innings while allowing just one run in a 5-2 win over the Retrievers. The freshman scattered five hits and walked just two while striking out a career-high nine batters, which is also a season high for any Stony Brook pitcher. All five of the hits Zamora allowed were just singles as he earned his first collegiate victory.
